Ben and Jerry's

Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield took a correspondence course on ice-cream-making, opening their first ice cream parlor in 1978. Cohen, who lacks a normal sense of taste and smell, had to rely on "mouth feel" and texture for variety in his diet, which led to the "trademark chunks" in their ice cream. Aron Ralston

Aron Ralston survived a canyoneering accident in southeast Utah in 2003, amputating his own right forearm with a dull pocketknife in order to free himself from a dislodged boulder, which had him trapped in Blue John Canyon for over five days. Following the amputation, he had to make his way through the rest of the canyon, then rappel down a 65-foot sheer cliff face in order to reach safety.
