The Holy Spirit is more of a spotlight than in the spotlight.
Four normative ways God speaks to us by His Holy Spirit:

1) The Bible
2) Prayer
3) Circumstances
4) Church (other believers)

1 Corinthians 2: 9-12, 14

9 But, as it is written, "What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him"—
10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 11 For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.

14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.
Romans 8:26-27

27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him,and he will make straight your paths.
These are patterns, not a formula.
Your relationship with the Father through the Son is the key to understanding the work of the Holy Spirit in your life.
Your response to the Spirit of God has to be an unqualified, "yes".
