Matthew 19:1-12

Title: Marriage and Divorce
Scripture: Matthew 19:1-12
Speaker: Reid Kapple, ReidK@ChristCommunityKC.org

>> Marriage Revealed
1) Male and female
2) Leave and Cleave
‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? (Matthew 19:5 ESV)

"So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” (Matthew 19:6 ESV)
“We marry to make a nice feeling permanent. We imagine that marriage will help us to bottle the joy we felt when the thought of proposing first came to us...We married to make such sensations permanent but failed to see that there was no solid connection between these feelings and the institution of marriage.” -NY Times
Marriage Ruptured

They said to him, “Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?” He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. (Matthew 19:7-8 ESV)
Marriage and Singleness Redeemed

“If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.” (Matthew 19:10 ESV)

But he said to them, “Not everyone can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given. For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let the one who is able to receive this receive it.” (Matthew 19:11-12 ESV)
“I am not single because I am too spiritually unstable to possibly deserve a husband, nor because I am too spiritually mature to possibly need one. I am single because God is so abundantly good to me, because this is his best for me.” -Paige Benton Brown (Singled Out by God for Good)
Marriage Replaced

Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure” (Revelation 19:6-8 ESV)

Exploring God's Design for Human Sexuality

In an effort to help us as we journey together, our pastoral team has worked diligently to create a resource on human sexuality called Exploring God’s Design for Human Sexuality. Our hope is that this document is helpful to us all as we seek to understand God’s design for human sexuality, and how we are to respond to the brokenness around us, and within us.
