Beyond Sunday
We are back in 1 Peter for the final three chapters of the book. As we identify as exiles in this world, we must trust in the hope of heaven, while bringing the Kingdom of God to earth. This week in chapter 4, we focus on how to handle suffering from a Kingdom perspective.

1. Recently, how have you experienced suffering and or seen others suffering around you?

2. Wrestle with this quote from Pastor Carlos from his message, “Suffering may not be God’s desire, but it is not outside His sovereignty.” What does this mean to you? What names come to mind when you think of those who suffered in the Bible? How do you feel about God allowing it, yet being in control of all things?

3. Reflect on 1 Peter 4:1-2. What is the role of suffering when it comes to being done with sin and instead, living into God’s will? How do these other passages relate to the reality and purpose of suffering: John 16:33, 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, Romans 5:3-5, Philippians 2:5-8, James 1:2-4?

4. Reflect on 1 Peter 4:12-13. Why do we find it so surprising and strange when suffering comes upon us? And why is it hard for us to find joy in suffering like Christ? How have you or another you have known been able to accept suffering as a part of life and find joy in suffering like Christ?

5. If suffering is part of God’s sovereignty here on earth as an exile, what could you do to hold it differently? What passage is the foundation of your perspective? What spiritual practice do you need to lean into when suffering comes your way?

Potential Action Steps:
--Ask God to give you a perspective on your suffering that is bigger than yourself.
--Review how you have suffered and how God has recycled it for good in your life or in others.
--Reflect on Christ’s suffering for you in Isaiah 53. How does this compare to your suffering?
PCC BENEDICTION
We say this at the close of each gathering.

May you jump into the arms of Jesus.
May He push you out into the world.
May you be healed, as you participate in the healing of others.
Not because you must, but because you may.
This is why we were born.
