How to … Survive the Storm

(Acts 27:13-14 NLT) When a light wind began blowing from the south, the sailors thought they could make it. So they pulled up anchor and sailed close to the shore of Crete.

14 But the weather changed abruptly, and a wind of typhoon strength (called a “northeaster”) burst across the island and blew us out to sea.
Storms are disruptive.

(Acts 27:15 NLT) The sailors couldn’t turn the ship into the wind, so they gave up and let it run before the gale.
Storms are discouraging.

(Acts 27:18-20 NLT) The next day, as gale-force winds continued to batter the ship, the crew began throwing the cargo overboard.

19 The following day they even took some of the ship’s gear and threw it overboard.
Storms are disorienting.

(Acts 27:20) – “The terrible storm raged many days, blotting out the sun and stars, until at last, all hope was gone.”

(Proverbs 29:18 KJV) Where there is no vision, the people perish …

When you don’t have a vision for the future.
You lose hope in the present.
Storms are temporary.

(Hebrews 10:35-36 NIV) “So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded.

36 You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.

(Acts 27:21-22 NIV) “Paul stood up before them and said: “Men, you should have taken my advice not to sail from Crete; then you would have spared yourselves this damage and loss.

22 But now I urge you to keep up your courage, because not one of you will be lost; only the ship will be destroyed.”
1) You will survive.

External storms should not steal internal joy.

(Acts 27:22 NIV) But now I urge you to keep up your courage, because not one of you will be lost; only the ship will be destroyed.”

(Philippians 1:21-24 NLT) For to me, living means living for Christ, and dying is even better. 22 But if I live, I can do more fruitful work for Christ. So I really don’t know which is better.

23 I’m torn between two desires: I long to go and be with Christ, which would be far better for me. 24 But for your sakes, it is better that I continue to live.

(Acts 27:23-25 NIV) Last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me

24 and said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar; and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you.

25 So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will happen just as he told me.

2. God will always provide

Storms will drive you TO God or FROM God

(Psalm 91:10-12 NIV) No harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;

12 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

(Romans 8:28 NKJV) And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

(Philippians 4:19 NKJV) And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

(Philippians 4:7 NIV) “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

(Isaiah 53:5 NKJV) But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.

(Isaiah 59:19 NKJV) When the enemy comes in like a flood, The Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him.

(Acts 27:33-34 NIV) Just before dawn Paul urged them all to eat.

“For the last fourteen days,” he said, “you have been in constant suspense and have gone without food—you haven’t eaten anything.

34 Now I urge you to take some food. You need it to survive.
3. You need balance to thrive.

(Acts 27:43 NIV) He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and get to land.
4. Swim to keep others live.
