The word “tenebrae” is Latin for “shadows” or “darkness,” recalling the apparent triumph of darkness on Good Friday, and Matthew’s reference to the increasing darkness that covered the earth as Jesus hung on the cross. During our service, the Sanctuary will progressively darken to remind us of the hopelessness that many felt on that day.
