Ephesians 5:18-21

The COMMAND to be filled with the Spirit

The IDENTITY involved

Present tense
Continual action as opposed to a one-time action
Literally translated = “be being kept filled”
Day-by-day; moment-by-moment submission to the Spirit

Passive voice
It is something we allow to be done in us
The Spirit does the filling as we do the submitting

Imperative mood
It is not an option but a command
We can’t live in God’s will without being filled with the Spirit




The COMMAND to be filled with the Spirit
The ILLUSTRATIONS involved

WIND - Used of the wind filling a sail and carrying the ship along
To be filled with the Spirit is to be moved along in the Christian life by God Himself

SALT - Used of salt permeating meat to flavor and preserve it
To be filled with the Spirit is to allow the Spirit to permeate us so everything we think, say or do reflects His presence

CONTROL - Used to speak of control
To be filled with the Holy Spirit is to be under His total domination and control

EXAMPLES:
Filled with sorrow (John 16:6)
Filled with fear (Luke 5:26)
Filled with anger (Luke 6:11)
Filled with wine (Ephesians 5:18)

A Christian can accomplish no more without being filled with the Holy Spirit than a glove can accomplish without being filled with a hand

Filled with the Spirit synonymous with walking in Spirit - step by step allowing the Spirit of God to control our lives (Galatians 5:16-17)

The result is the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)

Giving Thanks

The CONDUCT of being filled with the Spirit

Do not grieve the Spirit (Ephesians 4:30)
We grieve the Spirit when we do what He commands not to do
When we grieve the Spirit we are no longer filled with the Spirit

Do not quench the Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:19)
We quench the Spirit when we don’t what He commands us do
When we quench the Spirit we are no longer filled with the Spirit
