God doesn’t just forgive us. In his grace, he will “create in you a clean heart” - his own heart. This new heart, like his heart, is full of forgiveness, grace and love. King David is still remembered to this day as a man after God’s own heart because of God’s grace.
Forgiveness takes away something negative: a penalty or a debt. Grace adds something positive: a gift that is totally undeserved.
Forgiveness is a “personal act to release the one who sinned against me from my personal right to collect on the moral debt (to pay him back) for his offense, giving it over to God for His justice and mercy.”
