Now it came about when all the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan to the west, and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea, heard how the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the sons of Israel until they had crossed, that their hearts melted, and there was no spirit in them any longer because of the sons of Israel. 5:1-2a
5:2b-9, The Team Commitment, CIRCUMCISION

5:10-12, The Team Ritual, PASSOVER

5:13-15, The Team Coach, The CAPTAIN

SO WHAT?!
Being on God’s team means:
#1. He sets the AGENDA, not ME!

“…Are you for us or for our adversaries?” He said, “Neither…”
#2. He is the LORD, not the ASSISTANT!

Then Joshua fell face down… “What message does my Lord have for his servant?”
#3. He is GOOD, not TAME!

Joshua… saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand…The commander of the Lord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.
You cannot TALK your way out of, what you WORKED your way into.

Prayer Requests:

Group Discussion: What’s one team you really enjoyed being on and learned something about teamwork.
Read: Joshua 5

How do you set God’s agenda for Him? Do you spend most of your time in prayer asking God to do things for you and thanking Him for what He’s already done? What do you think about the following statements: #1. God does for those that do for themselves. (not in the Bible by the way!) #2. God wants to bless me. #3. If I follow God life will be easy.

Joshua asked, “…Are you for us or for our adversaries?” He (God) said, “Neither…” What do you think God was trying to teach Joshua by answering his question this way?
Read Ephesians 3:14-21, Paul says we are to be grounded, taught, oriented toward, fully committed, on the right agenda, in what? 3:17. Why does Christ want us grounded in that one thing? How should that impact us?

Then Joshua fell face down… “What message does my Lord have for his servant?” Who is the assistant in this verse? Do you think bowing down on your face is extreme or reasonable response? In Asian culture a bow is still an appropriate demonstration of respect, how do we show respect in the U.S.? Should we show more or do we show enough respect toward others?

Joshua… saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand…The commander of the Lord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so. With God we start in a sort of side by side relationship but sooner or later we move to a Joshua moment of falling on our face at His feet. When or has this ever happened to you?

What do you think of the statement, “You cannot TALK your way out of, what you WORKED your way into.”

Family Time: Play Simon Says with your kids. Read Joshua 5:14-15 to them and talk about how following God can be like playing Simon Says.
