Crossing Over - A Study of Joshua #6 Who Broke the Cookie Jar?

A study of the book of Joshua.

Locations & Times

Grace Community Church

Sunday 10:00 AM

In this series, we are studying the Old Testament book of Joshua.

· It teaches us how to live once we’ve place our faith in Jesus the Savior.
· It shows, through the examples of others, how to possess what God has promised us.
· It demonstrates the blessings of obedience and the price of stubborn disobedience.
· It illustrates the reality of spiritual warfare and the danger of compromise.
· It challenges us to be decisive, determined, and devoted.
From Here to There captures the idea of the children of Israel moving into the Promised Land, fulfilling the Lord's promise to Abraham approximately 500 years before.
Genesis 12:1-5
Sometimes when we want something so bad and don't get what we want, we take extraordinary and even extreme actions or steps.
Have you ever done something wrong and then were found out after the fact?
Cookie Jar example.

Caught With His Hand in the Cookie Jar

Joshua chapter 7 is a story that fits this scenario. (Joshua 7:1)

In the previous chapter we see God blessing the Israelites beyond belief.
After God led them in taking the city of Jericho, He instructed the Jews not to take any of the spoils of the battle for themselves. (Joshua 6:19)

In chapter 7 we see Achan caught with his hand in God's "cookie jar!"
At the city of Jericho, chapter 6, Israel leaned on God's strength.
At the city of Ai, chapter 7, Israel learned about its own weakness.
Joshua 7:2-5
It's been said, "we are never in greater danger than right after we have won a great victory!"
Satan knows that the areas of pride and arrogance are the best times to defeat us.
The great Bible teacher Warren Wiersbe used the outline in your notes to teach about being caught in the cookie jar.

#1 – A Disobedient soldier. Joshua 7:1, 20-21

#2 – A Defeated army. Joshua 7:2-5

#3 – A Discouraged leader. Joshua 7:6-15

#4 – A Discovered sinner. Joshua 7:16-26

We'll use these points to help you to both understand and apply truths of God’s word to your life.
#1 - A Disobedient soldier.
Joshua 7:1, 20-21; James 1:13-15
#2 - A Defeated army.
Joshua 7:2-5
1. Marginalized the holiness of God
2. Relied upon past methodology
3. Disregarded God's help
4. Listened to advice that was worldly, not Godly
5. Retreated instead of re-connecting with God
6. Maintained a shallow veneer of faith
#3 - A Discouraged leader.
Joshua 7:6-15
#4 - A Discovered sinner.
Joshua 7:16-26
1. God wants … us to understand that His glory is more important than our glory or the gold of this world.
2. God knows … what we do, whether anyone else is or not.
3. God thinks … sin is a bigger deal than we do.
4. God deserves … our best and when we fail we need to confess / not hide our sins and mistakes. [This is one of 8 people in the Bible who say, “I have sinned.”]
5. God deals … with us in His own time and in His own way.
H.O.M.E. Group Discussion Questions:

1. Have you ever done something wrong and then were found out? Discuss.

2. Read Joshua 6:18-21; Joshua 7:1, 20-21; James 1:13-15. Point out the details and describe what went wrong and why.

3. What do you think about the statement: “We are never in greater danger than right after we have a won a great victory.”

4. Review the four main points of the message. What did you learn? What can you apply to your life?
