Psalm 13
How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? 2 How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me? 3 Consider and answer me, O Lord my God; light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death, 4 lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,” lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken. 5 But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. 6 I will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me.

Sometimes, the catalyst for despair is the simple length of the trial.

On His Face — Complaining (Verses 1 & 2)

1. You have forgotten me. “How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?”

2. You don’t care anymore. “How long will you hide your face from me?”

3. I had to take matters into my own hands. “How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day?”

Proverbs 3:5
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

One of the quickest ways to complicate an already difficult situation is to take matters into your own hands.

4. I resent what you are putting me through. “How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?”

Feelings tend to create their own reality.

On His Knees — Praying (Verses 3 & 4)

The real test of your faith is when God seems distant.

1. Look and answer. “Consider and answer me, O Lord my God”

2. Give me a new perspective. “Light up (enlighten) my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death.”

We most often lose perspective when we operate in isolation.

Proper perspective views circumstances in the light of God’s character, instead of viewing God’s character in the light of circumstances.

On His Feet — Praising (Verses 5 & 6)

1. Trust God. “But I have trusted in your steadfast love.”

2. Rejoice in the hope of deliverance. “My heart shall rejoice in your salvation.”

3. Worship in spite of feelings. “I will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me.”
