In the gospel of John, Jesus comes to a community of desperate people, having put their hopes into a mysterious source of water. Jesus encounters an invalid man and asks him a poignant and provocative question. Do you want to be well? This weekend in worship, we will explore the implications of Jesus’ question, and discover how Jesus asks the same of each of us.
Reflection Questions
Where are you “stuck” or “paralyzed” in your life? Are there places in your life where you have surrendered to less than ideal circumstances? Why? Is there habitual sin in your life that you’ve grown to accept rather than work on eliminating?
Reflection Questions
Consider your overall health. Where in your life do you want to be well? What do you need healing from? Greed, lust for power or control, sexual sin, pride, pain, consumerism, self-loathing, gossip, addiction, deep anger towards another, inadequacy, physical ailments, neglecting the poor, anxiety, desiring revenge, depression, past experiences, loss, hopelessness, loneliness, the fear of never becoming well, disappointment in a spouse/parent/child/friend, or disappointment in God even?
Reflection Questions
What is the first step you could take towards health? Jesus required the man to take up his mat. It was a step in faith towards wholeness and healing. What is your first step towards health in Christ?
Reflection Questions
The invalid of 38 years has a miraculous encounter with Jesus. He walks away healed. That isn’t the reality for so many of us. How come? Why are so many of us left in our conditions? Is God not powerful enough to heal us all? What do those of us who have prayed for years on end to be healed do with this story?
Reflection Questions
Notice that almost all opposition to Jesus’ work and ministry is from the religious people of his day and age. Is it similar in our world? Who most opposes Jesus’ ministry now?
Reflection Questions
What other scripture passages do you rely on in times of distress or trouble? Are there promises from God that you cling to? Which ones?

Update: Ultimate Huddle letter and commitment card

I want to thank all of you who responded to the request for additional giving of at least $10 a week in the new year. It’s understandable that the holidays get busy. If you have not yet sent in the commitment card, please do. We’d love to hear from you. You can read the initial letter and respond online by clicking below. So far, we’ve heard from 40% of the congregation and the positive responses represent $4020 of the $10,000 monthly deficit. If this monthly deficit is not sufficiently bridged, then you are already aware adjustments in church staffing will need to be made. Some people who participated in the REACH campaign have said they plan to redirect all, or a portion of what they’d been giving, to the general budget. Others have communicated that they are not able to give more at this time and that is helpful for leadership to be aware of. As we continue to move into the new year, StoneBridge’s leadership is committed to keeping you informed about our church’s financial health and sustainability.
