RECAP: This month at The Journey we’re studying Romans chapter 8 to gain clarity, insight and focus for our lives going into 2020 and beyond. The great news for us is that we don’t have to do this all on our own. God has given us the Spirit to guide and direct us towards our best life in relationship with himself. This week we talked about the two different mindsets that we can have, either living according to the flesh or in alignment with the Spirit. And there is great hope for those who choose to live by the Spirit. We are not condemned and do not have to live with guilt or shame. Instead we are given a new identity in Jesus and the Spirit of God helps us live into this great hope we have in Jesus.
QUESTIONS:
(1) What’s a situation in your life where a decision you had to make or direction you had to take seemed really fuzzy, unclear and uncertain? How did you move forward even if the direction seemed uncertain?
(2) This week we talked about two different mindsets we can have — living according to our own desires (“the flesh”) or living according to God’s desires (“The Spirit). What are some ways you struggle with wanting to follow your own desires versus following God’s desires for your life?
(3) Read Romans 8:5-8. What makes sense and what’s hard to understand about this difference in living according to the Spirit versus the flesh?
(4) In Romans 8:9-11 it talks about the Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead being at work in our lives. What promises and hope does that mean we have in our own lives?
(5) What does it mean to you that if we live according to the Spirit, we are never alone and that God is always with us?
(6) Read Romans 8:12-17. What do these verses tell us about our new identity? What does this identity mean to you?

PRAYER: God, help me to live according to your Spirit rather than my own fleshly desires. I struggle and fail sometimes, but I know that my best life is found in you. Help me to put aside my old mindset and put on a new mindset of Spirit living. I know I have a new identity in Christ and the great hope I have through him. Thank you for not leaving me alone but always being with me.
