The Seven Deadly Sins
1. Lust
2. Gluttony
3. Greed
4. Sloth
5. Anger
6. Envy
7. Pride
Lust, gluttony, and greed are all excessive or disordered love of good things.
Wrath, envy, and pride are perverted love directed toward the harm of another.
And sloth is a deficiency of love.
Is the sin of sloth really that big of a deal?
All of the seven deadly sins are silent killers. They wait just below the surface. They lurk in the shadows of our souls.
Spiritually speaking, to be slothful is to be “meh” about God’s work and His people.
“Sloth is the sin which believes in nothing, cares for nothing, seeks to know nothing, interferes with nothing, enjoys nothing, loves nothing, hates nothing, finds purpose in nothing, lives for nothing, and only remains alive because there is nothing it would die for.” Dorothy Sayers
Sloth is a sin of omitting responsibility.
Eve sinned by eating the fruit and Adam sinned by failing to act.
In just seven verses we see these seven vices come to life.
In the seven deadly sins are seven paths to eternal death.
How do we kill the killer named Sloth?
We practice mortification of the flesh.
By the power of the Holy Spirit, we can put to death the sinful nature that is still in us.
“In a word, it’s sanctification, the process by which the Holy Spirit works in the lives of God’s adopted children to grow them and form them into the image of God’s one and only Son, Jesus Christ.”
When we put to death one of the seven, we’re practicing mortification of the flesh. We’re killing the killer and dying to ourselves.
In Christ, we are no longer slaves to sin!
The gospel is the story of God never giving up on us.
The gospel is His invitation to us to never give up on those around us.
The gospel is a story of possibility empowered by the Holy Spirit.
God’s Kingdom is coming and hope is worth holding onto.
For the Christian, being slothful is not an option.Sloth has no place in the character of a follower of Jesus.
To battle the sin of sloth, we develop the virtue of diligence.
Three ways to develop the virtue of diligence:
1. Be diligent in discipline
2. Be real with your zeal
3. Be serious about service
“Most of the time we’re more interested in “serve us” than service.”
-Rick Warren
WE GET TO SERVE!!!
When we kill the killers, we fight for sanctification!
We fight for completeness and perfection in Christ!
