1.What is the Eighth Commandment?

2.How did Jesus Clarify the Eighth Commandment?
3.How does the Eighth Commandment apply today?
For further thought and discussion:

Getting Started

1.What was helpful to you in this week’s sermon? What didn’t you understand?
2.What is your most prized material possession? Why is it so valuable to you? Why do you consider it more than “just stuff”?

Going Deeper

3.The 8th Commandment (“You shall not steal”) clearly prohibits robbery. But what other forms of theft does it prohibit (see also Exodus 21:16; 22:1-15; 22:25; Leviticus 25:10; Deuteronomy 25:13-14; Proverbs 20:10; James 5:1-4)? What are some of the most “acceptable” or widespread forms of theft today? How does this commandment convict you personally?
4.Read Genesis 1:26-31. What does it mean for humans to have “dominion” over creation (v. 28)? How does this make us like God himself? What don’t humans have dominion over? How does this shape our view of personal possessions? Explain the connection between personal possessions and human dignity.
5.Read Luke 19:1-27. Why was Jesus confident that Zacchaeus had been saved (see vv. 8-9)? What lesson does Jesus draw from his encounter with Zacchaeus (vv. 11-27)? How does seeing God as the ultimate owner of our possessions change our understanding of the 8th Commandment (see Psalm 24:1; Psalm 50:8-10; Malachi 3:8)?

Application:

6.The Westminster Catechism states that, “Where sin is forbidden, the contrary duty is commanded.” Why is this point important for us to keep in mind? How does this change our perspective on the 8th Commandment? What is the “contrary duty” we must pursue in order to obey this commandment (see Ephesians 4:28)?
7.If we understand our role as stewards of God’s possessions, we will (a) work diligently, (b) manage wisely, and (c) give generously. Which of these points was most relevant to you?
8.What’s one thing you can do this week to apply this commandment?
