Ten Talks Parts 9/10
Do Not Bear False Testimony/Do Not Covet

Here’s a brief list of the commandments found in Exodus 20:
1. You shall have no other gods before me – He is the only one!
2. Make no graven images – no worship of anything else but God! Jesus is the express image of God.
3. Don’t take the Lord’s Name in vain – the name of Jesus is above every name.
4. Keep the Sabbath day – rest from your works!
5. Honor your father and mother – to do so is to honor God.
6. Do not murder – do not hate your brother. Love instead.
7. Do not commit adultery – treat your fellow man with all purity and integrity.
8. Do not steal – honesty and generosity instead.
9. Do not bear false witness – do not lie or cast dispersions on your fellow person.
10. And do not covet – do not wish to have another’s life or possessions, embrace contentment.
A. Bearing false witness

1. Creating and spreading lies. Disparaging someone’s character with the intent of hurting them.
2. Destroy someone’s reputation from hearsay or judgment based upon incomplete facts.
3. Gossip dips into this sin deeply. Prov. 11:13 – Betrays a confidence…
4. How does bearing false witness hurt others? It damages their reputation, and they will experience loss, loss we are partly responsible for.

Luke 6:37-38

5. Repeating a matter separates close friends. Prov. 16:28 A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends.

Anti-Gossip:

-Let your yes be yes. Matt. 5:37 …anything beyond comes from the evil one.
-Watch your tongue.

James 3:5-6

- Speak blessings
- Love keeps no record of wrongs.
- You don’t have to have an opinion.

B. Do not covet

1. Do not desire or wish for what your neighbor has.
2. Servants, donkeys etc. were a sign of wealth. Could this be a deeper message?
3. Do not compare yourself to your neighbor in such a way as that you are ungrateful or discontented with what you have. Do not lust for another’s life or possessions.
4. This discontent breeds a vicious cycle of lust, greed, and judgment.
5. How does covetousness hurt others? It is the precursor to judgment and theft.
6. Covetousness leads us away from humility and sober living.

Contentment is great gain in that we begin with recognizing that God supplied us with what we need to fulfill our calling.

1 Timothy 6:6-10

If we have yet to have taken hold of it, then prayer, diligence, hard work, and faithfulness will prevail.

That which is gained in the fear of the Lord, is powerfully blessed.

Ultimately, it is not our place to deem anyone worthy or unworthy of the wealth they have, achieve, or maintain. God is sovereign over all things.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8

With our complete unhindered love for God, and our love for our fellow man, we will fulfill the spirit of the law by the infilling of the Holy Spirit. Rom. 5:5 (Read Rom. 5:1-10 for amazing encouragement.)

TAKE COMMUNION TOGETHER IN RESPONSE TO HIS GREAT MERCY AND GRACE TOWARDS US.
