1.What is the Sixth Commandment?

2.How did Jesus Clarify the Sixth Commandment?
3.How does the Sixth Commandment apply today?
For further thought and discussion:

Getting Started

1.What was helpful to you in this week’s sermon? What didn’t you understand?
2.Think of a time that anger caused you to overreact (i.e. in a way that surprised even you). Share your story with the group (the funnier the story, the better).

Going Deeper

3.In the English Standard Version, Exodus 20:13 reads, “You will not murder.” In the King James Version, this verse reads, “Thou shalt not kill.” What kinds of killing does God prohibit in the 6th Commandment (Numbers 35:10-15; Deuteronomy 22:80). When was killing justified in the Old Testament? What implications do you think God’s prohibition has for us today?
4.According to the Old Testament, why is murder wrong (see Genesis 9:6; Genesis 1:27-28)? How does this differ from other explanations you’ve heard as to why murder is wrong?
5.Read Matthew 5:21-26. How does Jesus clarify and intensify the meaning of the 6th Commandment? What misunderstandings of this commandment is he correcting? What’s the connection between anger, reviling, and murder? How does this challenge you personally?

Application:

6.Scripture gives us several things to do with our anger, (1) respond towards God (and not others; Psalm 10); (2) remember God’s final justice (Romans 12:17-21); (3) reconcile relationships quickly (Matthew 5:23-26; Ephesians 4:26-27); (4) redemptively engage problems (Matthew 5:43-48; 1 Corinthians 13:6). Which of these is most
7.What’s one thing you can do this week to apply this commandment?
