1.What is the Fifth Commandment?

2.How did Jesus Clarify the Fifth Commandment?
3.How does the Fifth Commandment apply today?
For further thought and discussion:

Getting Started

1.What was helpful to you in this week’s sermon? What didn’t you understand?
2.Name one family tradition that has been passed down to you. Why do you keep doing it? (Or, name one family tradition that you’d like to continue. Why would you like to continue doing it?)

Going Deeper

3.What does it mean to, “Honor your father and mother”? How is “honoring” a more expansive concept than simply “obeying”? How does the 5th commandment serve as a bridge between commandments 1-4 (20:3-11) and commandments 6-10 (20:13-17)?
4.What promise does God attach to this commandment (see 20:12b)? What does this mean? Explain the connection between honoring one’s parents, and living long in the land. What implications does this command have for parents?
5.How does Jesus clarify the meaning of the 5th commandment? In what sense is the 5th commandment not absolute (Mark 3:31-35; see also Matthew 10:34-36)? In what sense is the 5th Commandment absolute (Mark 7:9-13; see also John 19:26-27)?

Application:

6.There are three ways we obey the 5th Commandment today: (1) we listen to our parents when we’re young (Ephesians 6:1-3); (2) we learn to follow Christ from parents (whether physical or spiritual) throughout life (1 Timothy 5:1-2; Titus 2:1-6); (3) we lighten our parents’ burden when they’re old by caring for their physical needs (see 1 Timothy 5:3-8). Which of these is most relevant to you right now? Why?
7.What’s one thing you can do this week to apply this commandment?
