Children at The City
Children are welcome in worship. We value their presence. For all children (big and small) we have metal baskets on the tables with fun stuff in them.

Children can also attend Children’s Worship. If you’re interested in that, a First Impressions Team member will meet you in the back and escort you and your child to the Children’s Worship area.

Welcome to The City. If you’re new to TC, welcome We’re glad you’re here. Our vision is to Form Community. Uncover Purpose and create a li’l bit of heaven of earth.

The City is more than church as you might understand it. We started because God said I want you to turn church on its head. Get back to the days when the people who had faith were unstoppable in living lives of faith that permeate everything they did and because of it, others begin to see and ask to join the movement. The movement is empowered by the gospel, the Good News and at the center of the Movement is Jesus. In Jesus’ life on earth he turned the world upside down and gave permission to live differently than the custom of the day. Living he showed us how to love. Dying he made it known that love had no limits. Rising in the resurrection he gifted us power and purpose to be like him.

So, we believe that as The City Worship Movement we are here as a people. A place and a movement.

First we are people who meet in a place and live empowered by the Holy Spirit in our daily life to impact change and transformation in our relationships, friendships and every door we walk through.

So we're not here to teach you how to do church (don’t get me wrong we want to see you here but not for our sake). We're here to love you, to share good news with you and equip you to BE the church. To BE the people who help each other live and love like Jesus from the inside out.

And this, in case you didn’t know is the message time. I invite everyone to make two agreements doing the message. The first there are no rhetorical questions and second you matter. If you agree to agreement say amen. Today’s message may feel more like a workshop. You’re going to get the chance to practice, should you desire, to try on a few things.

This faith we seek to live is itself a CLIMB. Climb is an acronym, which stands for:
Connect with God
Learn something new
Invest in key relationships
Move toward the vision
Better your health

Each of these practices is a tangible, concrete expression of the Great Commandment. CLIMB gives you one way to answer the question “how do I live out the Great Commandment”
Let’s see the today’s scripture:

Luke 10:27

Luke 10:27

When we overlay CLIMB and the the Scripture you get
Connect with God is Love with your all soul
Learn something new is love God with all your mind
Invest in Key Relationships is love your neighbor as yourself
Move toward the vision is love with your all heart
Better your health is love with all your strength

Last week we looked at the C - connect with God.We practiced a model of prayer called ACTS, we used the SOAP method of studying scripture, and I invited you to walk the labyrinth. It’s here today as well. Feel free to take a meditative walk any time during the message. You won’t bother anyone, no one will gawk at you. This series is intended to encourage you to practice and try on new things as you shape a daily faith life. I am convinced my role is to inspire you and give you tools to practice and live out your faith the other 167 hours of your week. I can’t do it for you and you can’t do it vicariously through me. Each of us has a CLIMB, faith journey, and mountains to scale - our journey is our own -- but we can do it together, alongside each other.

So, for the first non-rhetorical questions….How did the week go for you practicing the C- connect with God?

Today we’re looking at the L - Learn something new and the I- invest in key relationships
L - Learn something new -----Love God with your mind Learning can be from a book, podcast, conversation, webinar, lecture, etc. or it can be something about yourself.

Learn something about yourself, self awareness, engaging in therapy, support groups, or learn something new about someone we know or don’t know.

Be Lifelong Learners. When you graduate from high school, you don’t graduate from learning. At the commencement, which means to begin, you are starting a time of learning that will last a lifetime. You’ll graduate, but the learning is for life.

Learn from Failure. Failure is only failure if you don’t learn from it. Thomas Edison tried the light bulb hundreds of times. He said, I learned hundreds of ways not to do it. Reframe past. /// Learn to try new things and to approach it as learning.

Learn from others. Everyone you will ever meet has something to teach you about life and how God works in this life. You just have to have a teachable, coachable spirit enough to ask questions. Inquire. Get curious. Ask clarifying questions.

Before ministry, I was a journalist. I was paid to ask questions. Paid to learn from others. When I got to seminary, I remained fascinated about questions, learning and teaching and how do we know… epistemology and pedagogy. One of the methods I resonate with is Praxis.

Praxis engages the learner and is rooted in dialogue, voice questions, problems to solve and dissent.

Praxis: Action and reflection, reflection and action, thinking and doing, doing and thinking

Jesus, rooted in rabbinical tradition, led with questions and stories allowing people then and now to create meaning.

In Alan Hirsch’s book, The Forgotten Way: Reactivating Apostilic Movements, he affirms the praxis model of learning. He also delineates the difference between the Hebrew and Greek concept of knowledge.Greek knowledge he posits is right thinking leads to right acting while Hebrew knowledge is right acting leads to right thinking.
hey
Greek: Right thinking is described as information, ideas, books, conferences.
Hebrew: Right action is described as action-reflection, embodiment, mentoring and modeling.
Now, Hirsch says you can still get to the ultimate goal of new thinking and new behaviors from right thinking and you do that by practicing what you think.

So if you believe something, act like it. When you act on it, think about it again.and continue to crystalize the learning.

Take a moment, what’s something new you’ve learned this week? Write a note in your phone, use your handout.

C- Connect with God
L - Learn something new and
I- Invest in key relationships
Let’s meet Miesha who climbed Camelback Mountain.
What parts of CLIMB do you hear in your story?
With her friend she was able to go further.
Invest in key relationships - Love your neighbor as yourself

Jesus Invested in many people. His investment looked different but he engaged people directly or indirectly, meaning through others.
Here’s one way to look at the relationships Jesus had.

Jesus’ key people 3, 12, 70, etc.
He poured into the 3 in his inner circle the most. Who are the key people in your life: family, work, and church that you spend time with, share your life ( the good, bad, ugly), and who are you supporting in their daily faith life.

CORE Peter, James, and John (his ride or die) and in the end some disciples were killed for beheaded, crucified upside down, for example. For us these are your BFF’s. People who really know you, on your best days and worst days and don’t judge, they’re there for you. I like to think of these people as the ones I can do nothing with and have a great time. Of course, I hope we have some people in our family that we’d deem CORE people

COMMITTED Disciples, followed him, shared the message, tried to be like him//for us this might be our friend groups, not quite ride or die, but you have fun with. This could be extended family as well.

CONGREGATION - 72 identify with him and sent into cities to share the good news, heal people. The Disciples, like us screwed up but Jesus still invested in them, ate with them and taught them....For us: to people you see everyday like those in your classes, live on your floor in res hall, co workers, folk you congregate with.

CROWD - woman with a bleeding problem, pressed through the crowd, Jesus gets in a boat to get away from the crowd that was pressing in on him while on the beach.(know you, know of you,)

COMMUNITY - Bethany, Bethlehem, Nazaereth, cities, regions. Sharing space with people. From the same town, attend the same school,
To invest in KEY relationships is about identifying who’s important to you and to whom are you important? This week consider your circles. And then make a decision about who you will invest in. The further out beyond your core circle you get the more intentionality is needed. I believe every person here has the ability to impact someone else by investing time, conversation in them.

Each of you, when you invest and allow yourself to be invested in, participate in the movement...movement of sharing the gospel, movement of living of the Great Commandment, the movement we say, as creating heaven on earth.

Jesus invested in the disciples who invested in communities and they started a movement that continue to day and for this reason we gather today.

We’re part of a legacy movement where:
From one comes many.
From many ones come many more
And a movement is underway.

Offering & Faith in Action

We’re going to support each other in our CLIMBs. The CLIMB handout is designed to give you a framework for starting to identify what your practices will make up your climb.

If you’re new to The City and feel like we might be a good fit, use the connect card on the clipboards to say hi and we will follow up for coffee.

Maybe today God has moved on your heart and you desire to take a next step in your CLIMB. We’ve listed next steps on the connect card or you can write a message. Place that in the bowls coming around.

We give financially to support the city. Our offering no matter how small or large or ways in which we acknowledge that God is at work in us and in the world and even in The City. We have many ways we give: comocreatesheaven.com, by text, or in person when the bowls come around

Neighborhood Kickoff:

How does movement look?

Using this movement model, The City invests in you.
Both Madi and I mentor people who are or are becoming Missional Leaders. Missional Leaders lead ministry areas like first impression, worship planning, setting up the space. They then invest in Servant Leaders who serve on a ministry team. Then there are attenders; our investment in you is creating space for you to be known in worship, the neighborhood, socials, diners.

Movement is a monthly gathering, where we invest your personal and spiritual development. This month we’re talking about Inside Out Leadership. It’s also a time, should you choose, that you can move from being an attender to becoming a servant leader.

How will you invest? (using your climb worksheet)
Who are the key people in your life, work, and/or church in whom you invest?
What do you invest? mentor, grow, relationships, people who love and support you.

I want to introduce you to Rita.
hey
