What is hope? How would you define it?
The desire to want something to happen or be true.
When we say we “hope” for something, we’re essentially saying that we aren’t sure it will happen.
What about the world? What do your worldly friends hope for?

What about faith? – How would you define it?
How does the Bible define it?
1. Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.
2. Faith is the reality of what is hoped for.
3. It is the confident assurance that what we hope for is going to happen. It is the evidence of things we cannot yet see.
4. Faith is the confident obedience to God’s Word in spite of our circumstances and consequences.

Hebrews Chapter 11 is a sort of Hall of Fame for the Heroes of Faith.
Why was Abel’s offering so pleasing to God? Because out of a heart of obedience, he brought the best he had to offer.

Verses 5 & 6 is the example of faith walking—By faith Enoch....
it says that Enoch “walked with God” 300 years. Enoch walked with God throughout his lifetime, in a wicked world, prior to the Flood. Many in that day were turning their back on God. Then God honored him by taking him away. He was not there anymore.

Verse 7 tells us about Noah—a picture of faith working.
Noah had a confidence in God’s provision of an ark that would protect him and his family from the judgment that was about to fall on all humanity. Likewise, God has promised salvation to all who believe in Him, so, we too, need not be destroyed by the coming judgment for sin.

The next set of verses describes the Patriarchs of the Old Testament and how faith appropriately waits. This section emphasizes the promises of God and His plans for the nation of Israel.
By faith Abraham believed and obeyed God even when he did not know when God would fulfill His promises.
By faith Abraham obeyed God even when he didn’t understand what God was doing. Verses 17-19 – demonstrates a hope for God’s power. Abraham faces the greatest test of his faith.
This passage here in Hebrews tells us what gave Abraham the strength to keep going. What gave Abraham the confidence to tell his servants, “we will worship and then we will come back to you”? Gen. 22:5. It was Abraham’s confident hope in God’s resurrection power.

11:20-22 talks of Isaac, Jacob and Joseph; men of faith who sometimes failed, but remained devoted to God and trusted His Word. Gen. 27 reveals that Isaac passed the promises and blessings on to Jacob; then Gen. 48-49 shows that Jacob shared them with his 12 sons.
Joseph’s faith was amazing especially after the way his own brothers treated him. Even the power given to him and the ungodly influence of Egypt didn’t weaken his trust in God. He knew what he believed that God would one day deliver him from Egypt.
What are we hoping for? The Rapture of the Church---that heavenly resurrection—the hope of a better resurrection. If you have faced the grave, you understand this hope for a better resurrection. If you have experienced the loss of a loved one, you understand this hope. Those believers who have lost a child understand this hope and it is the strength from this hope that allows them to keep going.
