Hebrews 10:32-39

In the United States we are unaccustomed to the physical persecution that so many of our brothers and sisters through time and around the world have encountered. However there is always a cost to following Christ and as 1 Peter 4:4 points toward, when we abstain from worldly standards, we will be “maligned”.

1 Peter 4:4

1. We need to remember the times God has already carried us _______________________________. (32-34)
Moreover, he increases the effect of the exhortation by saying that they had performed glorious exploits even then when they were as yet raw recruits: the more shame then would it be if they should faint now after having been exercised by long practice.

John Calvin
2. We must focus on our ___________________ _____________________. (35-36)
3. Instead of “shrinking back” from this world we must _______________ __________________. (37-39)

Daily Meditations

Memory verse: Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised.
Hebrews 10:35-36
Monday
Read Hebrews 10:32-39. What was the persecution that the recipients of Hebrews received?

What have you received as suffering because of the name of Christ in your life? Where do see this growing in the world?

Pray today for the people of North Korea, rated number one for persecuted Christians in the world. Pray for those that have been found to be Christian and have been sent to labor camps or have had their family killed.*
Tuesday
Read Hebrews 10:32-39. What do we get if we endure the struggles of this world? Is this reward enough for you? Why?

Pray today for the country of Afghanistan. This is a closed country to Christianity with only a few thousand Christians in country. Pray that those there would have an eternal goal and pray for those that are being prepared to go!
Wednesday
Read Hebrews 10:32-39 in a different translation or paraphrase.*

Which group do you normally align with in your daily life, “those who shrink back” or those “who have faith and persevere,” and why?

What is something you can do to be a person that doesn’t shrink back in the face of suffering?

Pray today for the country Somalia, the third most dangerous country for Christians to exist. With a country of over 15 million, there are maybe only a hundred Christians. Please pray for those that are Christians and will face great persecution. Pray that God continues to raise up people to share the gospel with a people group deep into a culture that is very dangerous for Christians.
Thursday
Read Hebrews 10:32-39. How can you seek to live out a faith that is enduring and bold today?

What does a bold step of faith look like for you in your daily life?

Pray today for the country of Libya. This is the fourth most dangerous country for Christians in the world. There is a strong group of over at least 30k Christians. However, it is an immensely chaotic and dangerous life. Pray for safety, and pray for boldness for those Christians in community with other Libyans.
Friday
Read Hebrews 10:32-39 in a foreign language if you’re able.*

Why is the writer of Hebrews so confident in the faith of those he is writing? Do you believe you can be confident in what God can and is doing through you?

What is one way you have seen your boldness grow this week? How can you make your faith a bold faith from now on?

Today pray for the country of Pakistan. With over 200 million people, there is a strong group of 3.98 million Christians in country. However, this doesn’t mean the work is done or that there is not great violence committed against Christians. Pray today for the people of Pakistan to come to know Jesus. Pray also for the many Pakistani Christians that need the Lord’s strength to continue their daily walk with Christ in boldness and truth.
Saturday
Finish any devotions you may have missed and then spend some time today reading over and working on memorizing this week’s memory verse and make a list of ten friends who don’t know Christ you can pray for.
