The Revelation of Jesus Christ
“Chapter Five”
August 31/ Sept. 1, 2019
You Version Notes
Welcome to our new study in the Book of Revelation!
Revelation is not a scary book about war and suffering.
· “The Revelation of Jesus Christ” is meant to be a book of hope! God is, and always has been, a sovereign God in control of every event in history.
Revelation 1:3 (NASB)Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy, and heed the things which are written in it; for the time is near.
The first three chapters of this Book deal with Jesus Christ ministering to the past, present, and future churches.
· Encouraging, Rebuking, Challenging
· The scene now changes from Earth to Heaven.
Revelation 5:1-14
· There is a LOT of imagery here, so let’s try to demystify this vision that John is seeing…
Revelation 5:1
This book is the focal point of the next several chapters, so what is this book?
· A Papyrus scroll…
· “Sealed up with seven seals.”
o The Roman custom was to seal wills and deeds with seven seals
o Each broken seal revealed the next step
· “written inside and on the back”
o Ezekiel 2:9-10
“The roll appears from the context to be "the title-deed of man's inheritance" redeemed by Christ, and contains the successive steps by which He shall recover it from its thief and obtain final possession of the kingdom.”
Revelation 5:2
Revelation 5:3-4
· “Heaven, Earth, or under Earth”
o Common expression meaning “entire universe”
Revelation 5:5
· Representatives of Christ’s Church and people.
· “lion from the Tribe of Judah”
· “Root of David”
None but the Lion is worthy! Not Angels, Gabriel, or Elders
Revelation 5:6
· “Four living creatures”
o Angels worshipping
· John is told of a lion, a descendant of David, but sees only a lamb!
o GR. “Arnion” (ar-nee'-on) “An innocent little lamb”
· “A Lamb standing, as if slain”
o The wounds of its sacrifice are still visible
· “Seven horns and seven eyes”
o All-seeing, and all-powerful
Revelation 5:7-8
· Harp and golden bowls
o Praise music and prayers
o Psalm 141:2
Revelation 5:9-10
· Every tribe and tongue means Jews and Gentiles
· “A kingdom and priests”
· Exodus 19:6
Revelation 5:11
· “Myriads” means beyond calculation
· Picture the scene.
Revelation 5:12
· This is a “Doxology,” meant as a short hymn:
· Seven qualities of Jesus that demand our praise!

Revelation 5:13-14
Chapters 4 and 5 give us a glimpse into Heaven and the glorified Jesus in His rightful place.
· It is critical that we understand the power and sovereignty of God to be able to grasp the magnitude of His grace and mercy!
Psalm 8:1-9
