Esther 4:1-17

Recap:
- In chapter 3 we learned that when God’s kingdom collides with our kingdom, our security can become threatened.
-When our security is threatened, we saw how to react in a Christ-like way:
- by seeking to be a good neighbor
- by not bowing down
- and by not acting on emotion

How should we react when a threat becomes having a attack?
I. In mounting a defense, there is a time to weep. V1-3

Mordecai was very aware of the gravity of the situation.
- He couldn’t not weep.
There was the threat of the total annihilation of his people and there didn’t seem to be anything he could do about it.
A situation like Mordecai's calls for weeping and sadness.
- There is a time to confront fierce attacks with courage and a stoic steadfast demeanor but not before weeping.
- Jesus faced the cross with courage, remaining silent before his accusers… but not before he wept in the garden and asked God to intervene.

\When facing spiritual warfare, take the time to weep over the gravity of it and the potential loss. It honors God when he observes us understanding that we are hopeless without him.

He is a compassionate God. He will come along side and weep with us and we will be able to find comfort in that…
II. In mounting a defense, there is a time to call for action. Vs 4-14

Even though Mordecai wept, he recognized that God was alive and in control and on the throne.
-In understanding this, he surveyed the situation and was able to discern the correct course of action

Action was called for, and before big steps are taken, little ones are taken.
When under a spiritual attack the step to take after mourning is action.
- You can’t make your home on the ash heap.
Ex: Jesus’ preparation and burial.
-Joseph was mourning. He was upset. BUT there were steps he needed to take to make sure that His Lord was honored in death.

When under spiritual attack, think in terms of small steps.
When action is called for, we too often act with haste.
- A good general must always have a battle plan. Mordecai and Esther were coming up with a battle plan. Jesus went to the cross with a battle plan. We must face spiritual warfare with a battle plan.
- This is not to diminish the role of the Holy Spirit… but the Holy Spirit, contrary to what a lot of people think, is not a procrastinator when it comes to planning and preparing for action.
III. In mounting a defense, there is a time to call for prayer and fasting. Vs 15-17

Esther did not underestimate the need for prayer.
- She was willing to do what she had to do no matter what,
- She knew that her strength was going to HAVE TO come from the Lord of heaven.

We cannot ever underestimate the need for prayer and fasting when a spiritual battle looms on the horizon.

Acts 13:2-3

Ezra 8:21-23

There is power in absolutely repudiating our own strength and ability and relying solely on the Lord’s.
- That is what prayer and fasting is all about.
Conclusion:
- Weep for the lost world and the spiritual battles that they are having to fight.
- Be strong in Christ and take courage when action is called for.
- Do not ignore the Spirit’s leading to pray and fast when tough battles loom on the horizon.
