Choosing Sides

Choosing Sides

Do Christians need to bother studying the Old Testament? How can Israel's history even be relevant for us today? Join us as we dig into the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel and discover a shocking truth – just as Israel longed for a king, we actually still long for a king to rule over our hearts today! Of course, for many of us, the king on the throne is ourselves. But what kind of king is actually good for us? What does the heart of that king need to be like? How can we find a king who will truly protect, love, and serve us? Join us as we explore these questions!

THIS WEEK'S SERMON – CHOOSING SIDES
Aligning with the enemy
Doeg "the Edomite"

Rationalization

John Stone on 1 Samuel 15
https://npberean.org/npbc-sermons/2019/3/3/rationalization
Possible signs of enemy alignment
• Suspicion/paranoia (“You’re against me / on their side!”)
• Manipulation (Saul: “I’ll give you…will they?” Doeg: “I saw…”)
• Worldly worldview (stick with my tribe, next king is my son)
• Projection, confirmation bias (suspects David of wanting to kill him)
• Ungodliness (deception, only 1 witness, kill priests, vengeful)
• Absolute statements (“You have all… No one… None of you…”)
Aligning with the LORD
Psalm 52

For the choir director: A psalm of David, regarding the time Doeg the Edomite said to Saul, “David has gone to see Ahimelech.”
Possible signs of alignment with the Lord
• Trust/run to the anointed king (Jonathan, Abiathar)
• Godly/upright, honor authority (Ahimelek toward both David and Saul)
• Fear opposing the Lord (Saul’s officials)
• Repentance (David “I am responsible…”)
• Protect life (David “You will be safe with me.”)
• Seek the Lord (Priests, ephod, w/ God’s “faithful people”)
Who is my king?

Pray for those who don’t yet know Jesus, and share your life with them so they can experience good news through your words and actions.

Next Week's Text

We'll continue to celebrate Advent as we ponder the heart of the True King that we all need to rule our lives - especially in this cultural season of busyness, consumerism, and self-indulgence.
