Some symbolism:
(v. 2) Lampstand– points to Jesus who lights our path (John 9:5)
(v. 2) Table with its consecrated bread– points to Jesus who sustains us with His Word (Matthew 4:4)
(v. 4) Golden altar of incense– points to Jesus who ________________ for us (Hebrews 7:25)
(v. 5) The atonement cover(Mercy Seat – the lid of the ark of the covenant) points to Jesus as the atoning sacrifice (propitiation) for our sin
“He is the atoning sacrifice(or ‘propitiation’) for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.”
1 John 2:2
Hebrews 9 is considered by scholars to be one of the most central chapters in Scripture. Chapters 8-10 are basically an extended exploration of the ‘New Covenant,’ and particularly its promise that sins will finally be forgiven in a way they couldn’t be under the previous covenant. But now the writer introduces a new idea: a covenant can only come into force at the death of the person who made it.
Three specific promises:

· _____________________ activity
· An intimate relationship with the Father
· Permanent forgiveness
