Introduction to Series: Around Every Corner

Ministry just around the corner can be as effective as ministry around the world. This message and this sermon series explore how our most effective ministry may be right in our own backyard. We know this because we see it all the time in our own people. People from StoneBridge volunteer at places like the Samaritan Center, Sarah's House, and even the Annual Charity Car Show.

We can make a difference within blocks of our homes and offices. We can have a longer, more personal impact where we live.

Americorps

AmeriCorps has equipped 800,000 people who have invested a billion hours on short term service programs.

Worldstrides.com offers service tours to teachers

Teachers and students have dozens, maybe hundreds of opportunities not to just study abroad but to serve. For instance, they can take a tour to India to address gender disparities facing young women, help combat female illiteracy and address issues of harmful child labor.

The Text In Context

An insightful commentary on today's scripture, Matt. 8:1-14.

1. The most effective ministry a Christian may have is right where they live.

Jesus met this person on his way from one place to another, right where he was, without having to make plans to go anywhere else. And, after healing the person, Jesus tells them to let their grateful life be a witness to what Jesus had done for them. That is a great recommendation for all of us. Let our grateful lives be a witness to what Jesus has done for us. We can do that right where we live.
Personal Reflection/Growth Group Questions:
1. When have you been involved in a rewarding service project?
2. Were you working within or beyond your comfort zone?
2. Did you use skills you were good at?
3. What lasting lessons did you learn?

2. Interruptions may be God’s introductions

Someone said, “Stop regarding all the unpleasant things as interruptions of one’s ‘own,’ or ‘real’ life. The truth is that the interruptions are precisely one’s real life.

You Were Born For This

This book by Bruce Wilkinson is about how we can make ourselves available to God so he can use us to be miracles in other people’s lives.

Personal Reflection/Growth Group Questions:
1. Describe a time God used someone in your life in an unexpected way.
2. Has God ever used you in an unexpected way in someone else's life?
3. Have you ever had an interruption become an introduction?

3. Don’t wait for a better time to serve

By thinking he would wait for a more appropriate moment, Pastor Neal almost missed a powerful opportunity to make a difference.
Personal Reflection/Growth Group Questions:
1. On a human level, when would be a better time than now for you to serve? Why?
2. If you had to add service to your schedule right now, when, where and how would you serve?

Next Steps

First, pray this prayer, Lord is there somewhere you want me to become aware of in town, someplace I can make a difference?

Secondly, as you read your news or a local paper, as you drive around town, be sensitive to any leading you may have.
