Revelation 16 describes the 7 plagues are divine judgments poured out on the earth/on God’s enemies right before Jesus’ second coming. Before that, in chapter 15 we find an introductory vision… John sees the 144.000 – the overcomers praising God.
At the end of the battle, the 144.000 declare Great and marvelous are Your works, Lord God Almighty! Just and true are Your ways, O King of the saints! It’s easy to say that when you’re already on the Sea of Glass… BUT have they always felt the same on their way there? Did they have moments of doubts? Did they at times question God’s character?
What about His justice now? God is on trial… He knows he is being judged and misjudged… To my mind, he should come out NOW with some clarifying statements in a cosmic event, BUT for some reasons He seems to be waiting for a later time…
God, do you really exist? If YES, what kind of God are you? If you are good, than you’re weak. You can’t be Almighty… otherwise you would do something about this, wouldn’t you? If you’re Almighty… you have the power but don’t use it, then you must be EVIL…
Faced with such accusation, God must have some answers. As witnesses we should have some working answers…
God is love! What does that mean? Well, that means God, even though Almighty, cannot always get what He wants. Why not? Because humans have a free will.
Free will is a necessary condition of love. There are things that he wishes but cannot force them. For instance, he wishes that the drug addict will quit smoking, He would even help, but he would not force his/her will!
Let me get this right: Since God grants humans freedom his own freedom is thereby limited…? “Somewhat” limited, because it seems that when humans cross the line, God can bring about His justice… (Revelation – the 7 trumpets are preliminary justices).
Someone may jump: Wait, Wait: Doesn’t Psalm 115:3 clearly state that God “does whatever He pleases”? Correct! But part of what pleases him is to respect, FOR THE SAKE OF LOVE, the free decision of His creatures. Yes, it seems that He’s pleased to respect the free will of those that displease Him… Weird, isn’t it! Love is weird!!!
But does free will account for all the kind and amount of evil in this world? If He’s Almighty couldn’t he prevent evil without damaging peoples’ free will? Couldn’t he arrange/rearrange reality in a way that would make evil plans fail…?
Obviously, there are situations where God intervenes and the evil plans of the enemy fail. In all fairness, it may seem to us that God did not intervene when in fact he did intervene…
We are in a warzone; a war is a very complex situation: It’s not only the visible world of humans; it’s also demons. And Satan… the accuser, often goes against someone in particular challenging his/or her love relationship with God like in the case of Job.
And what if somebody dies? Is that because God did not intervene? Is death always a loss? For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. (Phil. 1:21) Or if God did not intervene, does that mean he couldn’t..., or rather wouldn’t because of the things only He knows… Maybe a greater evil would have resulted if he intervened the way I think he should have intervened.
I can’t give an all-satisfactory answer to all those that challenge God’s justice. Numerous other factors may be at work of which we know nothing. I just want to use one more argument from Revelation: 19 "As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent. (Rev. 3:19 NKJ) C. S. Lewis: Pain is God’s megaphone to rouse a deaf world.
Why God…? Why me…? Never go to the devil for answers… Go and fight with the Lord… like Job. Have the fierce conversations with Him… and give Him some time… According to the Bible (Book of Revelation) there will be a time of clarifications… (1000 years)… a time for final conclusions for the entire universe… God is not through yet! We’re still in the warzone! The war is still raging on! Don’t jump to conclusions too soon!
