What is Shame?

The painful or vulnerable feeling I get aboutmyself when I sin against God, hurt someone I love, realize I’m not good enough, or do something embarrassing.

Guilt says, “I did something bad.” Shame says, “I ambad.”
How can I put an end to my shame?

1. Believe that God cares about my shame and wants to guide me out of it.

(v. 8; cf. Psalm 51:13; Luke 15:1-32; 19:10)
How can I put an end to my shame?

2. Stop pretending to be somebody I’m not, but get vulnerable with God about my sin and shame.

(vv. 3-5, 9; cf. 2 Samuel 11-12; Proverbs 28:13; 1 John 1:8-10)

How can I put an end to my shame?

3. Remember that Jesus empathizes with my shame, and draws especially close when I feel broken.

(vv. 6-7, cf. Psalm 34:18; 51:17; Hebrews 4:15; 12:1-2).
How can I put an end to my shame?

4. Find my value in what God says about me, not in my idols.

(vv. 1-2, 10-11; cf. Genesis 15:6; Psalm 103:12; Isaiah 43:25; Romans 4:1-8; Colossians 2:13-15)
I’m more sinful than I ever imagined, but more loved than I ever dreamed.
