Fathers – The Image-Bearers

Colossians 1:15–18 . . . Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all CREATION. 16 For by Him all things were CREATED that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were CREATED through Him and FOR HIM. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. 18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that IN ALL THINGS He may have the PREEMINENCE.

1 Corinthians 11:3–12 . . . But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head. 5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for that is one and the same as if her head were shaved. 6 For if a woman is not covered, let her also be shorn. But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered. 7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. 8 For man is not from woman, but woman from man. 9 Nor was man created for the woman, but woman for the man. 10 For this reason the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. 11 Nevertheless, neither is man independent of woman, nor woman independent of man, in the Lord. 12 For as woman came from man, even so man also comes through woman; but all things are from God.

I. It restores the power of submission
1 Corinthians 11:3 . . . But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.

• The submission of Christ

John 5:16–23 . . . For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them,“My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.” 18 Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, “MAKING HIMSELF equal with God.” 19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. 20 For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel. 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will. 22 For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son, 23 that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

Philippians 2:5-7 . . . Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but “MADE HIMSELF” (submission) of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.

• The submission of the Holy Spirit

John 14:25–26 . . . “These things I have spoken to you while being present with you.26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

John 16:12–14 . . . “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear themnow. 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.

II. It restores power to Worship (Don’t get caught up in the cultural specifics)
1 Corinthians 11:4-5 . . . Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head. 5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for that is one and the same as if her head were shaved. 6 For if a woman is not covered, let her also be shorn. But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered.

III. It restores the power of representation
1 Corinthians 11:7–9 . . . For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. 8 For man is not from woman, but woman from man. 9 Nor was man created for the woman, but woman for the man.

IV. It restores our witness to the angels
1 Corinthians 11:10 . . . For this reason the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.

1 Peter 1:11–12 . . . searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. 12 To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things which angels desire to look into.

Ephesians 3:9–11 . . . and to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ; 10 to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known “BY THE CHURCH” to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places, 11 according to THE ETERNAL PURPOSE which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.

V. It restores the interdependent relationship between husband and wife
1 Corinthians 11:11–12 . . . Nevertheless, neither is man independent of woman, nor woman independent of man, in the Lord. 12 For as woman came from man, even so man also comes through woman; but all things are from God.
