Group Discussion: In what ways was your father faithful?
Read: Philippians 2
Paul compares his concern and Timothy’s concern for the Philippian church to a father-child relationship. It is described as a “kindred spirit,” or “of equal spirit.” In what ways are/were you and your father concerned or of equal spirit about things? Like: spiritual issues, political, family, hobbies, vacations, attitudes, patience, hard-work? Paul and Timothy were both highly concerned about the Philippian church and their spiritual development/maturity. What is one area in your spiritual life where you’re trying to become more spiritually mature?
Timothy served the church with Paul and thereby proved his worth. How does serving at GateWay create a greater heart for ministry? Mention one way you’ve had an impact on others spiritual growth or they’ve impacted you at GateWay.
Paul describes Epaphroditus in 5 phrases: brother implies family loyalty, fellow worker implies effort and energy, fellow soldier implies risk in spiritual battles, messenger implies sharing information with others, and minister implies building others up spiritually. Which one would you want to be used of you when you’re gone? Why? How would you use them of someone close to you?
Paul says Epaphroditus “completed what was deficient,” in regards to the Philippians commitment to help Paul. That completion may have involved relational, medical or financial care. How are you completing what is deficient in your family?
Family Time: Read vs. 20 and talk about what it means to be of, “kindred spirit,” and make a list with your kids of how you’re alike.
