Going Deeper is designed for use with your small group, a friend or on you own. Its aim is to create time for you to spend with God and his word. Do as much or as little as you like. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact one of our pastoral staff.
1. Pray for the needs of your Life Group, for our church and our leaders, for personal and corporate renewal, and to allow God’s word to transform us. Share a recent entry from your Life Journal with the group.
2. This Sunday, our Biblical text was Acts 2:14-42 where, following the public display of the disciples being filled with the Holy Spirit, Peter boldly explained what everyone had just witnessed, and called on them to repent of their sins and to recognize the Lordship of Jesus. What thoughts or questions did the message raise for you? Which ones encouraged you or posed a challenge to you?
3. As you prepare to read Acts 2:14-41, imagine yourself in the crowd hearing this for the first time. What do you see, hear and feel? What stands out from Peter’s message? Were you “cut to the heart” (v37)?
4. Peter refers to prophesies by both Joel and David, affirming the redeeming power and Lordship of Christ and the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in all followers of Jesus. Do you know Jesus as Saviour, Lord, Healer, Enabler and Guide? What role has the Holy Spirit had in your life (Eph 5:18)? What questions do you have about the Holy Spirit?
5. Peter challenges the listeners to repent. What role does confession and repentance have in the believer? (Read Luke 11:4, 1 Cor 11:27-32). What does repentance look like? (Read Luke 15:17-19; 2 Cor 7:10; Luke 3:8). What are the benefits of repentance? (Read 1 John 1:9; James 5:16)
6. That day, 3,000 people heard the message, were convicted, repented, baptized and added to the church. What does this tell you about the value of the church? In what way does this new community resemble life in our Glencairn community? What is different? Are there changes that should or need to be made?
7. Take a moment of silence to consider how God is speaking to you through these verses. What is He saying to you about your life here on earth and your life in Heaven? What concrete steps of response do you want to take? How can your group support you in these steps?
