10 Words of Freedom- Unshackled: Recovering Freedom

AS WE GATHER we contemplate the difference between slavery and freedom. God starts the 10 Commandments by reminding us of who God is and who we are. We are freed people, who once were slaves. God is the one who has brought us into true freedom. So often, we yearn to enslave ourselves again to the gods of this world: desires, lusts, money, pride, self, technology, and on and on. We think God's commands are too burdensome, but in reality they are freedom. Experience once again the freedom that is found only in the cross of Christ, only in the redemption of the God who has spoken from Sinai.

Welcome/Call to Worship

P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
P: “I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.”
C: We have been freed by Jesus from slavery to sin, death, and true evil. We follow him in freedom.
P: “You shall have no other gods before me.”
C: We unshackle ourselves from the gods of money, power, greed, selfishness, and all other things that keep us from the freedom of faith in Jesus.
P: “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord.”
C: We seek forgiveness for our ignorant and careless words; we seek to speak to you alone in prayer, praise, and thanksgiving.
P: “You shall honor the Sabbath by keeping it holy.”
C: Lord, may our schedules never keep us from your presence; keep us always in your presence.
P: “Honor your father and mother.”
C: You promise to bless us, Father, when we submit our lives to you and respect our parents and authorities.
P: “You shall not murder.”
C: Jesus, you value all life; destroy our desire to destroy others and help us to be life-giving in all we say and do.
P: “You shall not commit adultery.”
C: Jesus, you show us what it means to be pure, dedicated, and holy. Strengthen us to uphold marriage, which is an earthly picture of your divine love.
P: “You shall not steal.”
C: We enslave ourselves when we take from others. We trust you to provide everything we need.
P: “You shall not bear false witness.”
C: We lie often, to protect ourselves, and for all sorts of terrible reasons. You are the truth, Jesus; let us live in Your truth.
P: “You shall not covet- not the relationships people have or the things people possess.”
C: We have more than we need, but we always want more. Free us from the desire of what others have. Fill us with the desire for your love, God.
“Come Thou Fount”

Come Thou fount of ev'ry blessing
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Streams of mercy never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount I'm fixed upon it
Mount of Thy redeeming love

Here I raise my Ebenezer
Hither by Thy help I'm come
And I hope by Thy good pleasure
Safely to arrive at home
Jesus sought me when a stranger
Wand'ring from the fold of God
He to rescue me from danger
Interposed His precious blood

O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be
Let Thy grace Lord like a fetter
Bind my wand'ring heart to Thee
Prone to wander Lord I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart Lord take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above

Here's my heart Lord take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above
Prayer

P: Lord God, Heavenly Father, you have given us true freedom in Christ- freedom from death and all evils. We often rebel against You, and we become enslaved, addicted once more. Keep us free from all that holds us captive; unshackle us from our man-made prisons; and fill us with the peace that comes from being known and loved by you. In Jesus’ name we pray,
C: Amen.
Responsive Psalm

Psalm 119:1-8
P:Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord!
C: Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart,
P: who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways!
C: You have commanded your precepts to be kept diligently.
P:Oh that my ways may be steadfast in keeping your statutes!
C: Then I shall not be put to shame, having my eyes fixed on all your commandments.
P: I will praise you with an upright heart, when I learn your righteous rules.
C: I will keep your statutes; do not utterly forsake me!
P: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
C: As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever, Amen.

Responsive Prayer

P: We come to you, Lord, freed from our past, failures, sins, and pains. You gave your Son, that we might become your eternal children.
C: Protect us that we may never take our faith for granted.
P: Make us ready, good Lord, for that time You will return again in glory.
C: Keep us strong in faith that we would live with our eyes fixed on Jesus.
P: As we arise each day, may we, by Your guiding, serve You in peace and joy.
C: May we always worship You as the Lord of our lives.
P: Gracious Lord, we bow our heads and bring our lives to You.
C: Lord, hear our prayers.
P: We can never sufficiently thank You, for all the love You shower on us. In love, You created us, body and soul. In love You took our place on the cross to die for our sins. In love You claimed us. In love You gave us life and salvation.
C: Hear our prayer of thanks and praise.
P: Guide us Lord, through the race of life. Help us to call upon You in every day of trouble.
C: For You will deliver us.
P: As we face the changes and the challenges of this world, guide us, gracious Lord. Lead us, step by step, that we may walk through this life in freedom serving You.
C: Lead us, O Lord, that we may live according to Your will.
P: Encourage us Lord, to pray for and build relationships with those who are enslaved by the gods of this world. Their minds are on earthly things not on heavenly things.
C: Bring them out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
P: With great anticipation we live each day, O Lord, awaiting that Great Day You will call us from this life to life eternal, which You have prepared for us.
C: Come, Lord Jesus, come quickly.
P: Hear our prayers, gracious Lord, that we may be strengthened
C: and You may be glorified,
P: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, including ourselves, asking You to hear us as we pray together,
C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Blessing

(Jude 1:24-25)
Pastor: To Him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before His glorious presence without fault and with great joy—to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore!
People: Amen!
"Holy, Holy, Holy"
Holy holy holy
Lord God Almighty
Early in the morning
Our song shall rise to Thee
Holy holy holy merciful and mighty
God in three Persons blessed Trinity

Holy holy holy
All the saints adore Thee
Casting down their golden crowns
Around the glassy sea
Cherubim and seraphim
falling down before Thee
Which wert and art and evermore shall be

From the cradle to the cross
God with us God with us
For this broken world You love
God with us God with us
You gave up Your only Son
God with us God with us
So that all the world will know
our God with us

Holy holy holy
Lord God Almighty
All Thy works shall praise Thy name
In earth and sky and sea
Holy holy holy merciful and mighty
God in three Persons blessed Trinity

From the cradle to the cross
God with us God with us
For this broken world You love
God with us God with us
You gave up Your only Son
God with us God with us
So that all the world will know
our God with us

So that all the world will know
our God with us
