Introduction
A text without a context is a PRETEXT.
So What?!
How are we to feel about money?
1. Money is inspiring, be FOCUSED
2. Money is a tool, use it APPROPRIATELY
3. Money is a crutch, lean on it CAREFULLY
4. Money creates opportunity, spend it WISELY
Be careful what you buy, It has the capacity to OWN YOU.
Generous Living: going above & beyond
Sermon Based Questions, Sermon on the Amount
Prayer Requests:
Group Discussion: What is one of your treasured material items from your childhood, why do you treasure it?
Read: Scriptures used from sermon notes.
How does or should, “A text without a context is a pretext,” effect the way you read Scripture?
How are we to feel about money?
If money is inspiring what amount of time do you spend on worrying that you don’t have enough? Do you have a budget? Do you follow it? How do you go about making large purchases, do you have a process? How much of a tendency do you have to impulse buy? How does American culture tempt you to worry or tempt you to buy into get rich quick schemes?
If money is a tool and you’re to use it appropriately, do you ever ask the question, “Does God want me to spend this money on this item?” Do you ever pray before making purchases? Have you ever asked a godly friend or relative about your buying habits? How does American culture tempt you personally to use money inappropriately?
If money is a crutch lean on it carefully means that we’re not to put too much trust in the stability that money brings. However, money is to be used for building as much stability as possible. How hard is it for you to keep up a savings plan? Dave Ramsey of Financial Peace fame says we’re to have 3 months wages saved in case we lose our job, is that your goal? He also says we’re to get out of debt starting with credit cards, have you tried to do that before? Do you have any financial goals that you can share with the rest of the group?
If money creates opportunity, and you’re to spend it wisely, how do you balance the use of money for regular bills and fun? Have you ever sacrificed fun to make an extra payment on a bill? Do you use credit cards too often for fun? Do you set a goal and then save ahead of time to have fun? How does American culture tempt you to use money in unwise ways?
What do you think of Pastor Ed’s statement, “Be careful what you buy, it has the capacity to own you.”
Family Time: Buy 2 piggy banks for each of your children and encourage them to put something in each one every week, one for church and one for savings. Read Ecc. 7:12, “For wisdom is protection just as money is protection.”
