Sermon Theme: Allowing God to break the generational cycles of sins/curses in your life

Romans 12:1-2

More Likely

If you are a child of a single parent, you are 120 times more likely to become a single parent to your children
The Facts

• The average American family makes $57,000 dollars a year. While Single mothers, especially those who have never been married, make on average only $17,000 dollars a year, which is just about on the poverty level.

• Low income families face issues of lower education levels and lower economic achievement which can often leave the child feeling lonely and isolated. Also, children in single-parent households are generally less supervised and there is less communication between the child and the parent.

• Further research shows that daughters of single parents are 30 to 53 percent more likely to marry as teenagers (which we know is not a good thing), and are 75 to 111 percent to have babies while teenagers and out of wedlock.

• Adolescents from single parent families were found to be three times more likely to be depressed than those living with two parents.

• Criminal activity is also more associated with single parent homes. Children from single-parent households account for 72% of teenage murderers and 60% rape crimes.
Biblical Cycles

The cycles that we see affecting generation after generation can EVEN be seen in the bible... Exodus 34:6-7 New International Version (NIV). This idea of punishing the children for parents sins is also found in Numbers 14:18 and Deuteronomy 5:9.

Exodus 34:6-7

Numbers 14:18

Deuteronomy 5:9

What the Bible Says

Important: the Bible does not say that your children are responsible for the sins of the parents but it says that they will experience the consequences of the parents actions.
4 Steps

• Confess
• Give your life to Christ
• Renew your Mind
• Praise & Worship
Confess

James 5:19: CONFESS your sins one to another so you can be healed

• In Proverbs 28:13: “Whoever conceals his sins will not prosper, but he who CONFESSES and turns away from them will obtain mercy.”

James 5:19

Proverbs 28:13

Give your life to Christ

• In John 3:16 it says: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, and whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”

• John 14:6 “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” You have to choose life…..choose Jesus so that you and your children may live. This is the textbook definition of breaking your cycles in you and your family. Will the church say Amen?

John 3:16

John 14:6

Renew your Mind

• Romans 12:1-2

• What does that mean, renewing your mind?

In Matthew 12:43, Jesus says “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first…” Instead of God being in your life seven days of the week, Satan is gonna be in your life seven days of the week because you did not renew your mind and replace those spirits.

Paul makes it clear in Ephesians chapter 5:18. Where he says “do not get drunk with wine, which will only ruin you, but be filled with the Spirit!

Romans 12:1-2

Matthew 12:43

Ephesians 5:18

Praise & Worship

The Story of Paul and Silas in Acts 16:16-40

• Paul and Silas were in jail in chains for casting out demons, they were doing God’s work. But instead of being sad, late in the midnight hour they began to praise Him. And when they were done, God orchestrated a great earthquake to come and it broke their chains and shook the foundation of the entire prison. And that’s why it’s important.

• In 2 Chronicles 16:9, it says “For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is perfect toward Him...”

Acts 16:16-40

2 Chronicles 16:9

Conclusion

If you have cycles in your life that you need broken and you want them to stay unbroken then focus on your creator and praise those chains away. And not only were Paul and Silas chains broken but the jailer and his entire family accepted Jesus. Talking about breaking generational cycles. This is what praise can do. It can shake the very foundation of your life.
