Getting Started

1.What was helpful to you in this week’s sermon? What didn’t you understand?
2.How far can you trace back your family history? What do you know about your family’s origin story? How have previous generations (i.e. the decisions they made; the places they chose to live; the values they held) shaped you into who you are today?

Going Deeper

3.In Hebrew, the book of Exodus begins with the word, “and” (1:1). Why is this significant? How does Exodus continue the story of Scripture? Read Luke 9:28-36 (See especially v. 31); why is the story of Exodus critical for understanding all of Scripture?
4.Read Exodus 1:1-11. How does this passage echo Genesis 1-3 (compare v. 7 with Genesis 1:21, 28; compare v. 10 with Genesis 3:1). Why are these allusions significant? How do they help us understand the story?
5.How is Pharaoh a picture of sin and oppression? What do we learn about the nature of sin and oppression from the book of Exodus? What do we learn about the nature of true freedom?
6.Why is Pharaoh worried about the Israelites? How does he respond? How does God overcome Pharaoh’s opposition? How does the Exodus story point forward to the Exodus story (Matthew 2:13-18)?

Application:

7.How does this passage demonstrate that God is at work behind the scenes? How does this encourage you personally? How does this passage demonstrate that God works through the weak and overlooked? How does this encourage you personally?
8.What’s one thing you can do this week to apply this passage
