Revealed series: We will journey through a few intense moments with Jesus that reveals both His humanity and divinity. We will grow in our knowledge of Jesus and seek to realign our lives with Him.

Today, we will seek to understand how Jesus reveals the true identity of those who follows Him.

Luke 19:29-40

Bookend events regarding the passion week: Palm Sunday and Resurrection Sunday…
· Passion Week is so named because of the passion with which Jesus willingly went to the cross to pay for the sins of people.
· Begins with Palm Sunday and concludes with Resurrection not Execution

As Jesus reached the last week of His life on earth, the crowds are there. However, Jesus reveals their true identity: followers, "praisers", and despisers.

Marks of a disciple/follower:
· Leave everything and follow me (Luke 5:11)
· If they abide in His Word (John 8:31)
· Love one another (John 13:34-35)
· Remain in Christ (John 15:7-8)
· Deny self and take up cross and follow Him! (Mark 8:34)
· A servant is not above his master (Matt. 10:24)… list goes on!
Jesus reveals that some are…
· Followers, vv. 29-36! Followers live set-apart from the crowd!

The biggest threat to the church today is fans who call themselves Christians but aren’t actually interested in following Christ. They want to be close enough to Jesus to get all the benefits, but not to close that it requires anything from them.” Kyle Idleman, Not a Fan

- Jesus is the reason that disciples obey
- Note that Jesus gave instructions; disciples followed-
- Obedience moves one from fan (belief) to follower (behavior)
- Many make a decision to believe w/o a commitment to follow!

Jesus reveals that some are…
· “Praisers” (only), vv. 37-38!

"Hosanna" (Matthew 21:9 records this) is often thought of as a declaration of praise, similar to hallelujah, but it is actually a plea for salvation. The Hebrew root words are found in Psalm 118:25, which says, “Save us, we pray, O LORD!”.

- Praised Jesus for what they’ve seen & wanted, not His identity
- Crowds followed Jesus b/c of their needs (still happening!)
- Followers praise because of His identity!

Jesus reveals that some are…
· Despisers! vv. 39-40 (Pharisees wanted the crowd quieted)

- They had already rejected this Jesus fellow (cf. to Matt 21:15)
- Why did the Pharisees reject Jesus?
- What they were seeing didn’t match w/ what they were wishing!
