Atonement and Crucifixion are linked through the Cross

CRUCIFIXION- First, Jesus wasn’t only person crucified; it was a very common practice, a practice the Romans perfected.

- Pain of crucifixion so great they invented new word ”excruciating,” which literally means “at the cross.”

- Crucified people would hang on the cross from a few hours to sometimes days.

- Crucified men only

- IF a woman WAS ever crucified which was RARE, she was facing away from the crowd

- They were naked- like nailing a naked man to the entrance of the front of a mall. It was meant to EXPOSE THEIR SHAME

- Once dead, victims usually not buried, but left for the vultures to pick apart.

- Josephus, the Jewish historian called it “the most wretched of deaths.”

JESUS VICTORY AT THE CROSS - Describe the last night, hermatadrosis in the garden

- His arrest, his mockery of a trial

- Describe Jesus’ physical condition as a result of scourging

- Carrying his own cross—note Matt 16: 24—“take up your own cross”=carry it, just like Jesus did on the way to his death, embrace it.

- at Golgotha, they plucked out his beard, then stripped him naked

- Embarrassing, shaming, humiliating

- 7-inch nails, Mocking crowd

- Asphyxiation was the cause of death…inability to expand the lungs

6. Our relationship with Him was restored

7. Gods WRATH was poured out on sin

8. God separated himself from sin

9. The blood of the lamb covered over our sins

10. Our sin was carried away

11. Access to God was granted
