What is worship?
Worship is a response [to Jesus' self-revelation]
Previously, Jesus' self-revelation was that he was resurrection and life… in response to this revelation, now Martha, Lazarus and Mary worshiped Jesus in their own way…
Evelyn Underhill has defined worship as "the total adoring response of man to the one Eternal God self-revealed in time.” (Real Worship, pg. 21)
"... worship is the response of all that man is to all that God is and does. We do not worship God for what we get out of it, but because He is worthy of worship. " Warren Wiersbe
· Martha’s worship = serving: Luke 10:38-42 describes Martha as a worried housekeeper. Her worship was through her service…
· Lazarus’ worship = being: the Scripture says that Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Jesus; Lazarus was simply enjoying His presence… (Ps. 46:10)
· Mary’s worship = breaking: breaks open the Alabaster box and lets the oil flow!
"... worship is personal and passionate, not formal and cold; and that it is our response to the living God, voluntarily offered to Him as He has offered Himself to us." Warren Wiersbe
· Could the symbol here be that we are the alabaster box? We were made to be broken open to power our worship upon Jesus!
