1 Corinthians 6:12-20 ESV
This passage speaks of ...
1. A distorted view Christian freedom
2. A distorted view of the body and sex
A Distorted View of Christian Freedom:
Vs 12: “All things are lawful for me”
“I’m no longer under the law; I’ve been set free from the O.T. law; I’ve been forgiven in Jesus and therefore I’m free to do what I wish as long as
NT does not prohibit it explicitly”
The Correct View: I can do what is not explicitly forbidden within certain qualifications.
Qualifications on Christian Freedom
1. Is it helpful / beneficial for those around me? (vs. 12)
2. Is it helpful for me and my walk with God? (vs. 12)
A Distorted View of the Body and Sex
Vs 13: “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”
“My body has various appetites. Food is one of them. Sex is just another appetite that needs satisfied. So I can do
whatever I need with my body"
Define sexual immorality = any sexual activity outside of marriage between a man and a woman.
Correct View: What I do with my body does matter. My body is to be used to glorify the Lord.
Structure of 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
1. You were bought with a price….[which leads to] vs 20
2. You are not your own (you belong to God). [therefore]. vs 19
3. His Spirit was put in you [so….] vs 19
4. Glorify God with your body vs 20. [and in vs 18 FLEE sexual immorality]
