Children at The City
Children are welcome in worship. We value their presence. For all children (big and small) we have 3 metal baskets on the tables with fun stuff in them.

Children can also attend Children’s Worship. If you’re interested in that, a First Impressions Team member will meet you in the back and escort you and your child to the Children’s Worship area.

In The City, we see the teaching time as communal. It’s not one person's time to shine but ours together with the Holy Spirit.

So two things you need to know.
The first is that in The City, there are no rhetorical questions. If a question is asked, you will be given time to think about it or answer it either in the teaching itself or later in a reflection time. You can record your thoughts however you'd like - the YouVersion app, your phone memo, a journal, post your thoughts on social media - but don’t let questions go unattended.

The second thing you need to know is YOU matter in this time of worship. When asked what makes The City different from other churches in Columbia, our belief is that we’re not in competition with other churches, we’re all on the same team. But there is one thing that is different and the difference is YOU. When you are here you make this experience richer, more textured. You bring your light and energy and questions and very heart to this space and that creates atmosphere and community for the short hour or so we’re together.
Last week, we started a series called
Questions on the Crossroad; Lessons from the book of Luke.
The first message was about making a decision.
Where are we going? On a path of becoming more like Jesus.

This week we approach the golden rule of scripture - The Great Commandment - and our mission:Helping each other live like Jesus from the inside out.Luke 10:25-27

Luke 10:25-37

If you think back to the sitcoms there are always neighbors who become part of the story-line.

In Home Improvement there’s Tim the Tool Man Taylor’s neighbor Mr. Wilson who shares life lessons through the wood slats in their shared fence. You never see his entire face.

On this Lenten faith road the Journey is not a far off place, it could begin right outside your door. The destination is to the place of loving God, self and neighbor. On this faith journey we’re commanded to love and commissioned to go.

Too often, people are afraid to go - go make disciples of all nations. People have made disciples in traumatic ways, dangerous ways, and even murderous ways. The fear of coming off in any of these ways leave us stagnant and disobedient.

What if we embrace where we go every day? We leave the house, go to work, school, study, go play, go hang out, go shopping - we’re on the go a lot. What if we saw the roads we travel in our everyday coming and going as part of our invitation to love our neighbor. What if every threshold we cross is a neighbor awaiting to get to know us - which includes knowing, over time, how Jesus has impacted your life. What if, any place beyond your threshold are your road trip buddies, your travel companions? What if right outside our door --on a well worn path we walk or drive daily and multiple times a day is the place we’re called to be a Good Samaritan. The people next door are our neighbors. The people in all of our going and coming are are neighbors. Now, you may not know yet, what their experience on the faith road is, but they are out there with you.

In the book The Art of Neighboring: Building Genuine Relationships Right Outside Your Door, the authors lift up several barriers to good old fashioned neighboring:

The first is TIME.
Hurry negates our opportunity to be loving. We tell ourselves that someday I’ll have more time to do some of the things that really matter. Here’s the question to ask ourselves about hurry: Do I live at a pace that allows me to be available to those around me? And if not, are all of the things I’m doing more important than taking the Great Commandment to heart?
One thing about today’s neighborhoods are garages. You never know when people are home. So we take chances to stop by and ring the bell. Back in the day, many people parked on the street and the hung out on their front porches. Did you have a front porch or do you now?

My grandparents knew everyone in their neighborhood because after dinner we always sat onside on the porch, talking, braiding hair, playing made up games, crushing on the boy neighbors, jumping double dutch. A sense of community formed on the porch. These days we must be intentional to form community in our neighborhoods. One way The City started doing this is holding diners - just throwing a party at your house for neighbors and friends.

The second barrier to neighboring is FEAR.
We can make up big hairy monster stories about people or situations that keep us from connecting with them. Listen, be safe, be discerning. But also take action and be courageous. We have two coffee addicts in the office here at church. They shall remain nameless---one is here today and the other is on a Puerto Rico Mission trip. These two plan coffee trips the night before. They are known in the local Starbucks. They know the baristas and baristas know them and their orders. Starbucks whose goal is to be our third place.. The place, aside from home and work, that we spend the most time. This is known as a third place. It’s a place you are known by name, feels, like home, and people actually engage you.

In our Scripture today, the Good Samaritan and the Great Commandment call us to be neighborly. The Road in the book of Luke has broken and beat up people on it. People who are ignored, avoided, excluded and disliked.People deemed unclean and unworthy. Sometimes we’re the person lying on the road. Sometimes we’re the passerby. And sometimes, we journey with them as the Samaritan did. It’s not uncommon to be the one who’s experienced breakdowns on the the faith road to turn around and be the one who helps others on the same road.

God has placed people on our path right before us - they are our neighbors across the street, next door, and behind us.

On the papers coming around you’ll see a house. That’s your house… It might also be your dorm room or apt. This week’s challenge is to be neighborly. This is a block map. The other boxes represent homes/people

Draw a box with 9 boxes - The center box is you/your house, the other 8 boxes represent people across the street, next door, and behind you. Now if you live in a dorm or apt you might consider eight people on your floor, for example.

Now, the question is who do you know?
Fill in the boxes with the names of folks who live in the house/rooms. Think about when did you last see and speak to them? What do you know about them? Hobbies? Work? Make it a priority to fill in the boxes with names, one or two names each week over the next month. Even if you have lived next to someone for 18 years but you’ve forgotten their name. Meet them again, just say something like “I’m embarrassed to say, but I forgot your name.” They probably don’t remember yours either.

This small act of knowing your neighbors and speaking to them is the beginning of forming community. It’s one step in living our the Great commandment.
The most important thing Jesus asked us to do:
Love God. Love self. Love neighbor.

If we’re going to be called the city then we should know the people with whom we live and could potentially share life with. It is our hope that by Easter you have at least half of your block map completed.

Together, let’s take small steps in forming community and loving our neighbors as we seek to live like Jesus.
