Going Deeper is designed for use with your small group, a friend or on you own. Its aim is to create time for you to spend with God and his word. Do as much or as little as you like. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact one of our pastoral staff.

1. Pray for the needs of your Life Group, for our church and our leaders, for personal and corporate renewal, and to allow God’s word to transform us.

2. This Sunday, we looked at the arrest of Jesus as found in John 18. This is beginning of our new passion of Christ series called “Only Jesus”. What thoughts or questions did the message raise for you? Which ones encouraged you or posed a challenge to you?

3.Read John 18:1-14. What evidence is there in these verses that, Christ’s life was given rather than being taken? (see also John 10:18) Why is this critically important for Christians?

4. The entire Passion narrative demonstrates Christ’s compassion and mercy for all. In these few verses in John 18, where do we see specific incidents expressing these character traits? What are they saying to us?

5. Read John 18:10-11 & Matthew 22:49-52. What does the “Malchus event” tell us about Peter’s character? About Jesus? What is Jesus showing/teaching us in this account?

6. Jesus’ repeated statements that “I AM” and the subsequent knocking over of the officers from the chief priests and Pharisees should have alerted them to the seriousness of what they were doing. Have you ever sensed such a cautionary sign or word from the Lord? How did you respond?

8. Take a moment of silence to consider how God is speaking to you through these verses. Is He asking you to make changes or to do something new? What concrete steps of response do you want to take? How can your group support you in these steps?
