In the book of Luke, Jesus was always going to a meal, at a meal, or leaving a meal.
Luke 5:27-31 (ESV)
After this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, “Follow me.” 28 And leaving everything, he rose and followed him. 29 And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. 30 And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” 31 And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.
The community saw a sinner and tax collector, but Jesus saw the human being, Levi.
Follow me = invitation
Levi (Matthew) immediately worked to connect his circle of influence to Jesus.
To share a meal = friendship, connection, welcome
Jesus enjoyed food, but He loved people.
The religious leaders were angry, because Jesus threatened their system.
Religion: believe + behave = invitation then belong
Jesus: invitation = believe + belong then behave
Romans 10:13
For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
"Those who think they are whole don’t seek healing." ― John MacArthur
Spiritual amnesia will cause mature believers to forget their reality before Christ, and impede their effectiveness in reaching the lost around them.
“The temptation of the age is to look good without being good.” ― Brennan Manning
Luke 5:33-34
And they said to him, “The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.” 34 And Jesus said to them, “Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?
The religious leaders demanded that Jesus comply with their rules. Jesus replied that He offers what their rules could never provide.
Luke 5:36-39
He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. If he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. 38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.’”
The Gospel of Christ was radical and revolutionary.
If we are comfortable with dead religion, we will not embrace the power of the Gospel
Isaiah 43:19
Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.
3Circle Church is not an aquarium. We are an earthly representation of the Kingdom of God.
Who is your Levi? Who is your one?
