The devil doesn’t have the power to MAKE us fall.
Pride produced the fall.
Pride is the sin we point out in others and justify within ourselves.
Like every other sin, pride is an issue of the disordered affections of the heart.
God created us for His glory.
God created us for His purposes.
Pride gets no pleasure out of having something, only out of having more of it than the next man... It is the comparison that makes you proud: the pleasure of being above the rest. Once the element of competition is gone, pride is gone.
-C. S. Lewis
Pride: A reasonable or justifiable self-respect
Pride: improper and excessive self-esteem known as conceit or arrogance.
Sinful pride is self-centered and boastful, and makes us take credit for everything we are and everything we do. Instead of realizing that we are dependent on God, in our pride we ignore God and believe we can get along without Him.
-Billy Graham
You can’t hide pride. It always finds ways to express itself.
The subtle pride of false humility.
"There is nothing more awful than conscious humility; it is the most satanic type of pride."
-Oswald Chambers
False humility begs for an audience; true humility is a state of selflessness based on unthought reaction to the grace of God.
Why pride is dumb.
God hates it.
We have no reason for it.
Pride is devoid of love.
The heart of pride is self interest. In self interest we do all of the worst things in the litany of human failure.
“For those who would learn God’s ways, humility is the first thing, humility is the second, and humility is the third.”
-Augustine
True humility comes by cultivating the mind that seeks only to serve others without either recognition or reward.
-Joseph Blanchard
Cultivating Humility
1. Know and acknowledge the source.
2. Trust God
If you belong to Jesus, then everything that happens, ultimately happens for you.
-Tim Keller
What would happen if we cultivated the attitude that says “I trust God so much that I will believe that what ever happens is for my good.”?
Humility says “God I want to learn this lesson.” Pride complains about that the lesson has to happen.
3. Love First
How do we get there?
Ask God for help.
Confess our own faults and weakness.
Make things right.
Lean into Jesus.
