Going Deeper is designed for use with your small group, a friend or on you own. Its aim is to create time for you to spend with God and his word. Do as much or as little as you like. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact one of our pastoral staff.
1. Pray for the needs of your Life Group, for our church and our leaders, for personal and corporate renewal, and to allow God’s word to transform us.
Share a recent entry from your Life Journal with the group.
2. This week we looked at John 13, which is the beginning of the second half of the book of John where the focus is on Jesus death. What thoughts or questions did the message raise for you? What encouraged you, or posed a challenge to you?
3. Read John 13:1-5. The foot washing takes place during the Passover meal just prior to Jesus crucifixion. What do you think was going through Jesus mind? What characteristics of Jesus are revealed through his actions? Has this story challenged any of your expectations of how you view Jesus? Explain.
4. Read John 13:12-17 As an act of His great love, Jesus washed Judas’, Thomas’ and Peter’s feet knowing that one would betray him, the second would doubt His divinity, and the third would deny knowing Jesus. How might this situation apply to us, when Jesus commands us to “do as I have done for you”? What does this reveal about yourself and your character?
5. Read Ephesians 5:21-6:9. In v21 Paul instructs us to “submit” to one another, which literally means to “stand under”. This is Paul’s way of describing what it means to be filled with the spirit of King Jesus, who washes feet. What are the three spheres of relationships where we need to “stand under”? What does that look like in each area?
6. Take a moment of silence to consider how God is speaking to you through these verses. Is He asking you to make changes or to do something new? What concrete steps of response do you want to take? How can your group support you in these steps?
