Getting Started

1. What was helpful to you in this week’s sermon? What didn’t you understand?
2. “Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we respond to what happens.” Agree or disagree? Why?

Going Deeper

1. Please read Philippians 1:19-21 and answer the following questions.
a. Do you think God wants us to be happy? Why or why not?
b. Paul writes the letter to the Philippians from a Roman jail. He has been falsely accused and his trial has been put on hold. He doesn’t know when or even if he will be released; or whether his imprisonment will end in freedom or execution. Yet Paul rejoices in his circumstances. Why? (Review vs. 18-25)
c. Paul has told the Philippians why he can rejoice about his imprisonment in vs. 12-18. Why does he say that he will continue to rejoice, regardless of the outcome of his imprisonment in vs. 19-21?
d. What do you learn about being happy in situations where most people would be miserable in vs. 19-21?
e. What does Paul mean, “For me to live is Christ and to die is gain?”
f. Why is clarifying our purpose for living essential if we’re going to experience Christ’s joy?
g. How would you complete the verse, “For me, to live is….?”
2. Please read Philippians 1:22-24 and answer the following questions.
a. What do you learn about Paul from these verses?
b. Why isn’t enough to clarify our life purpose? Why must we embrace that purpose daily if we want to experience joy?
c. How did Paul embrace his purpose in life?
d. How do you embrace your purpose in life?
What is one thing you could do to live more consistently with your life purpose?
