Lesson 3
"Commandment #2: Idols Are Dumb"
(Exodus 20:4)
I. Idols Defined

Idols are:

A. Objects created by the hands of man. (See Isaiah 42:8)
"carved image" = an idol
B. Objects meant to resemble or represent God's likeness.
(See Deut. 4:11-12, Ex. 33:18-23)
"likeness" = something portioned (fashioned) out, as a shape
II. Idol Worship Condemned

"The tendency of the human heart to represent God by something that appeals to the senses is the origin of all idolatry."

—D. L. Moody
A. Our worship is not to be relegated to fixing our attention/affection on things we believe:
• Best represent God
• Bring us closer to God
• Become a viable substitute for God

B. Idols can include:
Objects/Relics
Places
Rituals
Pursuits
People
III. God-Honoring Worship

A. We are called to worship God in spirit and truth.

B. We are called to submit ourselves to the Holy Spirit of God, who instructs us through the Word of God, to the right and proper way to worship the true and living God.
In Conclusion:
What is big enough, beautiful enough, glorious enough, perfect enough, or holy enough to truly represent Almighty God?
A— Nothing made by man!
