Inner circle: Relationships that matter
Jim Rohn, american entreprenuer and motivational speaker, said this: “We are the average of the five people we spend the most time with.”

The series is based on the book "11: Indispensable Relationships You Can’t Do Without" by Leonard Sweet.

Each Sunday we’ll be looking at biblical characters who possess qualities that we desperately need in our own circle of friends and influence. Hopefully, you’ll also begin to see who you are to others - what characteristics you are bringing to other people’s inner circle
Who’s Your Editor?

In our scripture this morning, we read about David and his editor, Nathan.

David is a dude full of big God-Potential. He’s been anointed by God to be the King of Judea and Israel. He’s slain Goliath, he’s conquered many in battle. He is seriously blessed by God, and has clearly been chosen by God to do big things.

However, he’s still but a human, and he’s seriously abused his power. David saw this woman named Bathsheba bathing on her roof. And he decided he wanted to “get to know her a little better" and she becomes pregnant. So, David begins trying to cover up his mistake. He calls her husband, Uriah, back to chat and encourages him to go home and spend some time with his wife. Which, makes sense right? That’s a simple enough cover up. But, Uriah refuses to go inside the house to be with his wife. All his buddies are out on the front lines. How could he be comfortable at home? Uriah chooses to sleep outside with the servants. David tries again, this time getting him drunk, and the same thing happens. He sleeps outside. So, with seemingly no other option to cover his mistake, David sends the order to have Uriah sent to the frontlines, essentially killing him in battle. Once this is done, Bathsheba mourns and then David marries her, taking in the child and her.

So, now enters Nathan. A trusted advisor to David, Nathan had been giving advice to the king over all sorts of things for years. They had a close bond, and he had some platform to come in and essentially call David out for his poor behavior. He served as an editor to David.

What is an Editor?
Editors are the people in our lives who know us, that see our potential, and that care enough about us to desire to see us live fully into our purpose.

It’s important to note that editability is not the same as accountability. Accountability is about the ‘math’ of our life. What do we need to add or subtract to help us avoid the bad?

Editability is about the relationship. In our lives, whose main goal is to help us do good? Editability is less about adding or subtracting, and more about people speaking wisdom and truth into our lives. Editors aren’t focused on math or logistics. They are welcomed intruders who get you thinking without telling you what to think.

It could be argued that editing occurs right before accountability. How would we ever know what to add or take away if no one ever helped us see it? We see this in the Nathan and David story. Nathan didn’t call David out directly. He helped him come to his own conclusion, and to see the error of his ways. Then, after being edited by Nathan, David went before God to pray and repent for the choices he had made. Then, he went to try and fix what he had done. Had Nathan not spoken up, David would have continued on his path, blind to the error and the brokenness he was spinning in the wake.

An editor can make proofs and comments - but all of that is suggestion. It’s up to us to put it to action.

Who are the editors in our lives?
So, how do we recognize the Nathans in our lives?
#1: A Nathan asks questions:
Relationships require questions, and often questions are intrusive. They can bring us comfort, they can challenge us, and they can convict us. Questions force us to be reflective, and to pin-point the areas we need to work on.Ultimately, it’s the editor’s job to get you to ask the question of yourself: “Is God’s name being glorified in my life?” When Nathan went to David, he did so by asking him a question around a scenario. He didn’t come right out and say it. It pushed David to be reflective on his own actions. Are the choices I’m making extending the love and grace I’ve received to others? If I were to run into God right now, would I be proud of the way I’m representing God in my life, or are there areas that I need to change? An editor pushes us to ask ourselves those questions.

#2: A Nathan tells the truth:
A Nathan helps you see the truth by speaking truth into your life. But, this isn’t a free pass to “truth-dump” onto someone. We’re not here to rip someone apart, but to build them up - to help them see the ways they can further themselves toward their God-potential. They help you see those things that you’re running from. A Nathan’s editorial eye can help us see beyond what our own eyes are capable of. So often, we look at our lives and we’re just mesmerized by the day-to-day. We have difficulty seeing outside of our own view. And it can be hard to look at a life you’re building and recognize the spots where it isn’t so great, and where it might need some work. That’s where a Nathan steps in. They, in loving truthfulness, help us see those spots that could be touched up. Because they’re as invested in the finished product as we are.

#3: A Nathan turns the light on:
A Nathan sheds light and truth on the dark places of our lives we try to hide. We try to pull a David and cover our tracks. We have these areas of our lives that we hide. We tuck them away, keep them to ourselves, we bury them in our hypothetical basements, and we make sure the outside is spick and span. However, mold grows fastest in the dark. When we isolate the broken or flawed areas of our lives, we create a space for those things to grow and expand, slowly bleeding into the rest of our life. A Nathan steps in here to shine some light in that darkness. They choose to head down into those dark, moldy basements of our lives and they begin working. They shed light, highlight areas that need replaced and repaired, and they kick start the process of healing and repentance. That’s what Nathan did for David. He stepped in, shone a light on David’s darkness, and inspired him to deal with it. Our editors ask questions, tell the truth, and turn the light on.

Why should I be editable?
We may be able to name who the Nathan’s could be in our lives - and yet, knowing who they are is irrelevant if we’re not open to editing. And the reality is, the more we desire for God to use our lives - the more we need an editor.

There’s our personal story, and then the role we play in God’s larger narrative. To know that our lives are writing what could be the greatest addition to the story God is trying to tell the world? That my life, right now, holds the potential for that much significance and impact? That means that everything we do, every choice we make, determines the direction our story is going to take. So, If we want to be a light, if we want our piece of the story to tell about hope and transformation and love - if we want God to use our chapter to do big things - we’re going to need an editor or two. T

Take a look at any literary icon, any writer whose material has left a lasting mark on the world, and you’ll find that they had an editor at their side, often making comments on the very things that make their works significant in the long run.
Thomas Wolfe had editor Max Perkins.
Poet T.S. Ellot had editor Ezra Pound.
Poet Emily Dickinson had editor Thomas Wentworth.
And what might be the most appropriate duo, Charles Dickens was edited by his best friend Edward Bulwer-Lytton. He went on to name his son after Edward - much like David named his son after Nathan.

Those are some of the greatest writers of our time, and even they knew that for their work to reach its full potential, it was going to require another set of eyes.

God has placed purpose and potential on our lives. We’re each equipped with skills and passions that hold the opportunity to create heaven all around us. But, for our life story to create impact that lasts long after our time - we’ve got to be open to edits. We need to be open to letting the draft of our life be tweaked in spots, emphasized in spots, and for some things - cut out altogether.

Editing makes us the best version of ourselves. At the same time, we’re but a character in God’s greater story. And a big piece of any significant tale is the character development. It’s the idea that as the story progresses, choices are made and actions are taken that push the character to evolve, in some way, by the end of the story. God is writing this grand masterpiece, and God’s chosen to use each one of us to further along the plot. But, depending on when we choose to step into that narrative, we’re at varying levels of development. And for us to become the necessary character to further along the story god is writing, we’re going to need a few edits. Nathan was sent to David by God to be his editor. In fact, the name Nathan actually means “gift.” God gifted David with an editor because he knew that his character had some developing to do, and once he was there he would be the perfect character to push the story along. I wonder how many of us would look at the editors in our lives and consider their words a “gift.” Did David consider those words a gift?

When we’re open to allowing Nathans to speak into our lives, we’re recognizing that, while we aren’t perfect, God has a desire to use us - and we’re open to being used by God.
#1 - Who in my life has the permission to speak up on my behalf? Who have you allowed to be open and honest with you about your actions and behaviors? Who cares enough about your overall success that they would speak up when you need it most? Who has complete access to your life?

#2 - Do they understand your purpose? Do you have someone with a similar purpose speaking into your life right now? How can you deepen your friendship with them? And if not, get connected. Join a City Diner, College students - join a neighborhood crew. Get to know some people and find that person you trust to help you along the way.

#3 - Who has given you permission to be a Nathan in their life? Who has deemed you their editor? Who trusts you to speak on their behalf? How can you begin to do a better job of intentionally investing in this person?
Who do you have in your life right now who holds your feet to the fire and your hands to the plow in times of blessedness and brokenness?

Who in your life right now needs some loving motivation to get moving in the direction of God’s preferred future for their lives?
