Jesus' Dream for THIS Church, part 3

Jesus' Dream for THIS Church, part 3

This is the third of a five-part series. We've talked about the church being the body of Christ on earth, and the call to love and unity. In this talk, we'll look at an old teaching called, "The priesthood of believers."

Locations & Times

100 S Eola Dr, Orlando, FL 32801, USA

Sunday 9:00 AM

When Jesus said, “I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it” he had something specific in his mind. What he had in his mind is found in NT, and wow, does it look different from today. TRUTH IS= we need to rediscover the church & why we’re doing this series.

The church is the church only when it exists for others. -- Dietrich Bonhoeffer

THE BIG IDEA: Jesus’ Dream for the church can save us from the consumerism that shrinks our souls and ruins our lives

The Priesthood of all Believers. If you’re a believer, you’re a priest, you have a ministry, a calling, an adventure, a privilege to serve the world around you. IRONICALLY, BY SERVING OTHERS, YOU’LL SAVE YOUR SOUL FROM CONSUMERISM

Acts 2:42-47

“See how they love one another” Tertullian

For in no time, they lavish their all.” -Lucian of Samosata

To what extent has your experience of God’s love for you created an expressive love for the people around you?

Over time, the church exchanged MISSION for INSTITUTION.
The church stopped being a passionate, no holds barred pursuit of those outside of it. It shifted and became focused on those within. The church became a place you went on Sunday morning.

Martin Luther said, “this word 'priest' should become as common as the word Christian” because all Christians are priests. HOWEVER, change that occurred in the Reformation was largely soteriological, not ecclesiastical; that is to say, the church rediscovered the life-changing truth of the gospel, without rediscovering the life-changing truth about the church and how it was to be structured.

1 Peter 2:9-10

1 Corinthians 6:19

Romans 12:1-2

When scripture says we’re a temple, it means people see God in us.
When scripture says we’re a priest, it means we're to minister to those people.
When scripture says we’re the sacrifice, it means that by dying to our consumerism, and picking up our cross, we will find joy and we will change the world.

Three Questions
(1) What would it look like if Jesus went with you to work?
(2) What would it look like if you were on our staff team here?
(3) What is the real reason we’re susceptible to consumerism?

Matthew 16:24-25

It’s a Privilege to give of our Time.
It’s a Privilege to give of our Talents.
It’s a Privilege to give of our Treasure.

REALLY ALL WE'RE TALKING ABOUT IS IDENTITY
1. You are a gift from the Father to the Son
2. You have super powers that affect others positively.
3. You're the Temple, priest, sacrifice where people get to meet God.
