What’s WRONG with our culture?

What’s GOOD about our culture?
“Contextualization”

Connecting YOUR MESSAGE with YOUR PEOPLE
“Sound contextualization shows people how the plot lines of the stories of their lives can only find a happy ending in Christ.”

Tim Keller, Center Church, p 90.

“It is giving people the Bible’s answers, which they may not at all want to ear, to questions about life that people in their particular time & place are asking, in language & forms they can comprehend, and through appeals & arguments with force they can feel, even if they reject them.”

Tim Keller, Center Church, p 89.

1 Corinthians 9:19-23

Paul’s driving motivation is TO WIN PEOPLE TO CHRIST FOR THE GLORY OF GOD.
“Paul’s actions, which appear to them to be inconsistent, have integrity at a much higher level.”

Gordon Fee, I Corinthians Commentary, p 431.

Acts 17:16-34

How do you challenge people or aspects of a culture in an appropriate way?

Use REASON, not ANGER.

AFFIRM THE GOOD you can see.

Recognize & acknowledge where GOD’S TRUTH is affirmed by their culture.

RESPECTFULLY CHALLENGE where their beliefs contradict God’s truth.

1 Peter 3:15

Colossians 4:5-6

Matthew 5:6

How important do YOU think it is that we affirm the good we see in our culture?

How’s your balance
with respect to our culture?
“Preach the gospel at all times. When necessary, use words.”

St. Francis of Assisi, 1182-1226
GOD’S PRIORITY:

Let your life match your words. Love the people around you.
Give them your life and speak to them the life-giving words of the gospel.

NEXT STEPS

… look for specific things in my life that might be hindering my effectiveness with the gospel in my culture and with my friends.
(It could be rights I insist on or concessions I haven’t been willing to make)

… brainstorm aspects of our culture that are pleasing to God.

... share with a Pi2 friend something I’ve noticed in them that is commendable (practice “affirming” where I can).

… if I already do plenty of “affirming”, look for an appropriate opportunity to respectfully “challenge” with the gospel.
