He is central to our individual lives and to the life and ministry of our Church. 1 Peter 2:5-7
2) A CHURCH WITH A HEART FOR EVANGELISM AND MISSIONS:
We are a church that believes in the Great Commission. From our local community to the most remote part of the world, we believe that every person deserves the opportunity to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ. Mark 16:15
3) A PRAYER-FOCUSED CHURCH:
We are a church that believes in the power of prayer. Prayer draws us close to God and impacts our lives and world. Luke 11:1
4) A SPIRIT-EMPOWERED CHURCH:
We are a church that is dependent on the power of the Holy Spirit to accomplish the instructions of our Lord and to live a life that is pleasing to God. 1. The Magi arrive in Jerusalem and Herod hears about Jesus' birth

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him." When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. "In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written: But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel."
Matthew 2:1-6

Who was Herod the Great?

• Herod was a governmental title in the Roman government.

• He ruled as king of the Jewish people under Roman authority for 33 years, from 37–4 BC.

• Herod was a wise and efficient ruler.

• He was also a cruel tyrant.

• He was hostile and opposed anything to do with Jesus or any kind of religious practice.

• Personally as a king, he had a problem with someone else who was a king.

• The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.
Romans 8:7

Who were the "chief priests and teachers of the law?"

• Chief priests: In charge of the worship and activities of the temple.

• Teachers of the law: copyists, scribes and trained teachers.

• There are times God wants us to step from knowledge to experience and we wont move toward it.

• Here was also a chance to witness and share with Herod.
2. Herod calls for a secret meeting with the Magi

Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him." After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route. Matthew 2:7-12

Why were the Magi the only ones to see the star and perceive its meaning?

Gold: Kings
Gold is a gift that would be presented to a king because it was the most precious metal of that day and it symbolized royalty.

Frankincense: Priest
Frankincense was associated with the priests and was purely for the worship of God, and was not to be associated with any sort of wrong-doing.

Myrrh: Sacrifice
The third gift the wise men brought was a valuable gum-like substance called myrrh that was used to embalm the dead.
3. Joseph flees to Egypt and Herod has a final act of vengeance.

When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him." So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: "Out of Egypt I called my son." When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: "A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more."
Matthew 2:13-18
